This was so well researched and written, and I would highly recommend it as a resource for anyone looking to become a better ally to the queer community, especially trans and non-binary members. Eye-opening and emotional, this book is on my re-read list. There was a lot of terminology to absorb in this, and one read-through does not feel like enough to fully process and understand every piece of information.

I’ve been following Schuyler on insta for a few years, which is how I came to seek this book out. I think the work he has done here to create a resource for both cis and trans people to better understand the trans experience is really incredible. I would recommend this to anyone, literally anyone, but I have to say that as a former educator and GSA sponsor, it would have been amazing to have read while I was still in the classroom. As someone with trans friends now, I really appreciate the parts where Schuyler addresses what to do if you make mistakes with trans people you’re close to. I was in the middle of reading this when Nex was killed in Oklahoma, and it’s hard not to imagine how much better off we’d all be if we were seeking to understand rather than criminalize (even discussing) being trans. <3

Schuyler Bailar is gentle, informative, open, and honest in this guide to trans and nonbinary identities. It's a great entry point for folks who want to support trans people but don't know how, with a comprehensive look at everything from coming out to health care to parenting to athletics and beyond. Bailar thoughtfully shares his own journey and experiences as a way to explore the personal impact of transphobia and living in a cisnormative world. A great gift for anyone who wants to be a better ally!

Thank you to Hachette Go for my advance copy. My opinions are my own.

A guide with lots of heart. It is heartbreaking the abuse and trauma trans and other non-binary individuals go through! As individuals deserving of love, they are often prevented from living full and complete lives. And Bailar, who has found a gift for educating on transgender inclusion out of his own painful and loving experiences, helps the reader find the words and concepts necessary for understanding.
Each individual is different and valuable, no matter the journey, and I appreciated the positivity and candor that radiated and permeated the book.

I enjoyed this book, it was a good refresher on the basics of gender and transness. I liked the middle sections of the books best, specifically the chapters on trans kids and trans athletes. It has definitely given me talking points if (when) these conversations come up around family. I would recommend to anyone looking to learn more about the trans experience and question societal gender norms

Thank you Schuyler for sharing your experiences and knowledge. I learned so much about how to be a better ally to trans folks - highly recommend!
