This book covers a lot of ground, some better than others. Probably not meant to be read straight through, but referred to chapter by chapter according to need, it has a lot of repetition, so that each section can be read alone. I skimmed the parts that were meant for other readers (trans readers) and appreciated the parts for me. The beginning held the most new information for me; the chapter on What Not to say informed me more than I expected. While I'd not ask most of the questions listed, I could certainly have thought them, and several made me rethink my suppositions about gender. As did "Finding the Right Words." I'll admit to having thought indicating pronouns "silly" for people presenting as they appear, but now see the assumptions hiding in that thought. The chapter on trans people in sports answered many questions I had on that subject. The book is worth reading for those chapters.

This is the best book I’ve read so far on the trans experience. He did a good job of going over the basics, his own transition story, and how to be an ally. I would recommend this book to anybody who wants to learn more.

I am very appreciative of this book. It has given me a glimpse into the world of those who identify as trans-gender. Schuyler Bailar is a brave man who is willing to share his story in order to make the world a little easier for those who did not receive the family support that he received.

I’d consider this a thorough 101 on humanizing trans people, and a necessary read for all.

Everyone should read this book. Some parts can be hard to get through if you have a transgender person in your life, but all of the content is super important and needed. I learned so much and I am grateful to Schuyler Bailar for taking the time to write this book and share so many vulnerable parts of his journey with us.
