I went in expecting more of a memoir, but it's mostly very informative non-fiction--as someone who is already familiar with LGBTQ/trans topics, some of the stuff wasn't new to me, but I still think this is a magnificent resource that is very well researched through both lived experience and facts and numbers. I especially recommend the chapters on Trans folks and sports, and the one on toxic masculinity through a trans man's lens.

As someone who considers herself a strong ally to the LGBTQIA community, Iโve decided to dive into more nonfiction books this year to educate myself more, and this one was exemplary. Bailar wrote a well-researched and easily-readable guide to gender theory and how to be an impactful ally for trans people.
Broken down into four main parts, he defines the specific terminology, breaks down myths vs facts, and provides both personal insight and historical context into a variety of trans aspects.

Considering I have almost 100 highlights from this book, it would be unreasonable for me to list every impactful aspect of this book (please just read it). But I will note some standout pieces that pierced my thoughts.
In particular, Bailar discusses how our country was created with deep rooted biases: including racism, sexism, and against anyone different from white, cisgender, heteronormative males. Because of that, we all have ingrained biases that can make us subconsciously think certain ways - and itโs our job to examine those beliefs and privileges.
Personally, I had some reflecting and dismantling to do with trans athletes. I particularly appreciated his chapter on sports and how myths have been perpetuated in the media cycle.

One of the most powerful parts of this book talks about trans youths. I want to reiterate his message that LGBTQIA kids are at significantly higher risk of suicide, and so the cost of not believing and supporting these kids is unconscionably high.

One thing I hoped to take away from this book was direct, kind ways to explain that you donโt need to *understand* transness in order to respect trans people.
I donโt expect everyone to be on the same page as me, and I want to give people time to mentally grow, but I also want everyone to realize the urgency of loving the people around us.

The sheer patience, bravery, raw honesty, and empathy threaded through these pages brought me to tears. I respect and appreciate his dedication to creating a more inclusive, loving world, especially at times like these when hatred and violence is running rampant.
Schuyler Bailarโs balance of kindness and bluntness was exactly what I needed to read, and I recommend this book to absolutely everyone.

This is a fantastic place to start in your trans education. I decided I would annotate this book for a family member who is asking me about the trans experience and hardships. They asked from a place of ignorance, thinking that the trans experience isn't a hard one. I will happily mail them this book with all my notes so that they may be enlightened on just what being trans comes with.
Written from a trans man and athlete POV, I still found it incredibly educational. Even the chapters I didn't think I needed to read, like the long chapter on being a trans athlete, gave me more information and insight on the general trans experience. This book is for everyone and should be required reading.
