I’m sure this is very good literature but I had no idea what was going on.

I listened to this with an audiobook while playing animal crossing...

One of my least favorite ones in the collection. Just a bit uninteresting and could have done without the slur... That really caught me off guard.

Opening lines:
Such an expression of unhappiness was enough by itself to make one’s eyes slide above the paper’s edge to the poor woman’s face—insignificant without that look, almost a symbol of human destiny with it. Life’s what you see in people’s eyes; life’s what they learn, and, having learnt it, never, though they seek to hide it, cease to be aware of—what? That life’s like that, it seems.

*SPOILERS*

I actually had to read this twice to understand that the narrator is making up stories about other people. Once that is understood it becomes interesting rather than confusing. I say interesting because although I see its worth and was keen on the idea I wasn't able to connect with the piece since (unlike what seems like scores of other readers or writers) I don't make up fake lives for other people. I'd rather let them remain a mystery. There was also the issue of a rather depressing tone.
In the end this piece like all other Modernist works is - in the most succinct terms - pretentious. If Modernism is your thing then great, go for it. Read it up and rave. But if pretentious and depressing writing is not your cup of tea I'd suggest you move on.
