This was an interesting and enjoyable read with good world building, magic and folklore. It also highlighted the prejudices against people with different beliefs and practices. The relationship between Garson and Evike was a well done enemies to lovers story.

While the quick blurb sounds amazing, for me this story didn't hold up to the potential. I didn't connect with the characters, the environment or the world. I found no reason given in the story for the characters to change, which made character arcs completely unbelievable. The quest was driven by a mcguffin (an item used only as a trigger for plot) and the mcguffin was dropped from the story when no longer convenient. I found the magic system inconsistent and unclear, with arbitrarily large powers being provided because it suited for the plot.

The audio narration was fine.

Although I enjoyed the story the pacing felt a little off to me. Some parts seemed to drag on unnecessarily while other parts I wanted to be more in depth felt rushed over. But overall I enjoyed the writing style and the relationship between the main characters is so precious to me.

I cannot stomach this book another moment longer. This author has so many problems in this book. From the annoying main character to the heteronormativity to the disrespect shown towards pagans to the racism to the sexism to the ableism. It was the ableism that was the last straw. When she talked about a girls burnt face as ugly and monstrous, I had to call it quits. I will not be picking up anything else by Ava Reid ever again.
