You SHOULD read this book if:
* You enjoy stories of alternate or fictional histories of differently arranged societies.
* You like the idea of alternate dimensions.
* You like satirical parodies of class/sex (actually a bit sad at some points).
You SHOULD NOT read this book if:
* The parlance of the 19th century would lose your attention.
* You don't like math and, more specifically, geometry.
The first half is a depressing geometric dystopia while the second half is a philosophical diatribe similar to those ancient Greek ones involving Plato and Glaucon. Maybe more like Plato and a time traveler. I found it hard to finish personally. I'd give it a 2/5 for that, but the influence and originality of said novel, discussing the idea of the 4th dimension plus in 1884, bumps it up to a 3/5 in my eyes.

This was a weird one. Intriguing but a bit nonsensical at times, and the exploration of gender I found quite frustrating. I was not a big fan.

On the one hand, the sexist garbage in his book is a *lot*. Which is kind of amazing for a book where the main character is literally a square. On the other, this book presents an incredibly useful metaphor and thought experiment. So I will absolutely be recommending it to anyone, with that caveat.
Graphic: Misogyny, Sexism
Moderate: Ableism, Forced institutionalization
Minor: Child death
There’s brief mention of shapes that are born with irregular dimensions either being surgically corrected or euthanized
Also, straight lines are women in this universe and they’re all considered inherently mentally inferior to men.
