The actual story is pretty basic and it's just half of the book, with the first half being an in-universe encyclopedia. However, the ideas are fascinating and described clearly through several illustrations. This is up there with Verne for innovative scifi writers of the late 1800s

I thought the message and ideas in this were really, genuinely interesting
Especially the depiction of people being so blocked off to the idea of something greater than their current understanding. I thought that was a really clever metaphor
It read like a textbook might, or just a really well phrased non-fiction book, and while it was boring at times I like what it almost represents in phrasing this non-existent world in an objective way from the perspective of the main character (but it did also just feel like a pile of world building for what seemed like little payoff considering there was practically no present plot, just a few events)
I’m glad I read it though, despite feeling like the author was really trying to drive in his points the entire book (much like the introduction says)

Il libro è ambientato in un mondo bidimensionale chiamato Flatland, abitato da forme geometriche e la storia è narrata dal punto di vista di A. Square, un cittadino di Flatland che è un quadrato. La società è rigidamente organizzata in classi sociali basate sul numero di lati di ciascuna figura, ma un giorno A. Square fa un incontro straordinario con una sfera tridimensionale proveniente da Spaceland (il mondo tridimensionale). La sfera tenta di spiegare a A. Square la nozione di una terza dimensione, ma A. Square fatica a capire. La sfera quindi lo porta in Spaceland per farlo sperimentare personalmente la terza dimensione e tutte le sue certezze cominceranno a oscillare.
"Flatlandia" esplora concetti matematici, filosofici e sociali, utilizzando l'allegoria della bidimensionalitá per affrontare diverse tematiche: conformità, pregiudizio, conoscenza e la difficoltà di percepire dimensioni oltre la nostra esperienza diretta.
É un romanzo concettualmente geniale, considerando che è stato scritto nel 1884, tuttavia non è stato capace di catturarmi a pieno stilisticamente parlando: la prima parte del romanzo, interamente descrittiva e piuttosto ripetitiva, mi ha annoiata parecchio, la seconda parte mi è piaciuta un po' di più, ma probabilmente se non l'avessi ascoltato in formato audiolibro non sarei arrivata alla fine.

Mi è piaciuto tanto tanto e, considerando il tema trattato, è molto divertente e a tratti "commovente".
Il social commentary era molto divertente (you're missing the point by idolizing il quadrato), anche se, a tratti, un po' "antiquato".
Sarebbe divertente da riproporre/vedere in forma teatrale o cinematografica.
Magari questa cosa è condizionata anche che le copertine sono simili, ma mi ha ricordato anche UIQ nel modo migliore possibile(?).

The concept was interesting, but the book was still somehow boring. The social satire (or what I think was the satire) was perhaps the best part of the book. The mathematics was fun but also the interesting part of it didn't last particularly long.
