There are a lot of mixed reviews for this book and after reading it, that's understandable. However, I'm of the opinion, that I if I'm reading fiction, I want it to be an escape from real life. If the story grabs me, it can even border on unrealistic within reason (fantasy is not in my top 5 genres). The love story between Ben and Fallon is improbable from the beginning and the twist is even more so. Both characters had redeeming qualities that outweighed their flaws. The writing draws the reader into their story, wanting more for them and sympathizing with their situations, so I felt it was a great, though emotional, read.

I loved the premise of the book - only reading snapshots of the main characters’ lives; secrets and the past only unravelling when they choose to share them with the reader or each other. I loved witnessing Fallon learn to love herself, through Ben’s unwavering amazement of her. Two people learning to forgive each other and themselves, despite their pasts, and love each other, without letting their goals become excuses to keep them apart.

Finally read a CoHo book. I can see the hype- and even though this isn't the (most) hyped book of hers, I enjoyed it for the most part. There were a handful of grammar mistakes that caught my attention. I didn't like the "but he's your father" guilt-trip-like comments. Did like how it shows how we can be more understanding of each other and our situations. Though not the best way, it was definitely A WAY of illustrating empathy and forgiveness.

incredibly misogynistic, the dialogue doesn’t feel like it comes from 18 year olds, the relationship develops too fast, and did I mention that Ben is an idiot

Ah CoHo, I hate to do this and give an unpopular opinion… But unfortunately I was not a fan of this one.

If you’re into Instalove—two characters falling in love at first sight, all consuming love straight out of the gate—then you’ll be immediately pulled in. I guess I found out with November 9 that I don’t really care for that genre of romance. Ben and Fallon’s instant attraction didn’t seem believable to me.

The main thing that pulled my rating down was not something that went away throughout the story as it was literally the character of Ben, the MMC. From the beginning he gave me the ick by the way he talked and interacted with Fallon, without even knowing her. He was too confident and domineering and controlling for my taste, disguised as the “nice guy” who saw past Fallon’s imperfections. DUDE YOU’VE SPENT ONLY A FEW HOURS WITH HER. Idk, the simp behavior jumped out.

The plot had potential and I liked the sections being split up by the same date each year. However, that further drove the nail in the coffin that was my effort to give Ben and Fallon time to grow on me. Instead, with each year passing, I found their “connection” more and more forced and weirdly obsessive.

Hoover’s writing wasn’t bad, she always has great pacing in her novels, in fact. For me, the main relationship in this book just really put me off and the rest of the elements that I liked didn’t make up for it.
