DNF. This book is strangely written and I just couldn't get into it. The book is written from a distant 3rd person narrative and I never could "feel" the characters or care about what was going on.

That was excellent. Totally drew me in. I loved all of the lore, and each new aspect just added to it. I especially liked when Maniye realised she wasn't the centre of everyone's world. You got a real sense of her growing up, and coming into her power. I loved the way the stories wove together and things made sense. It never dragged for me. Really glad I took a chance on this, and I'll be reading the rest.

Updated review after re-read in 2024:
I previously (back in 2018, in my Goodreads days) gave this book 3/5 stars. At some point I acquired the sequel. It's been over 6 years so I'd forgotten a lot, and I knew I needed to read this again before I could read "The Bear and the Serpent".
I'm happy to revise my previous 3 star review and give this book a higher rating on second reading. It worked very well for me, and once I got started the book was very hard to put down. There may not be very deep character development here, and the book may meander a bit (it probably could have benefited from being at least 50, probably 100 pages shorter) but Tchaikovsky excels at interesting ideas and this book was filled with them, fast-paced and engaging, and I am now looking forward to reading the sequel.

I loved this so much. It was so inventive, and when you read a lot of fantasy it's hard to find something completely different, but this is it. It's a shape shifting, non-eurocentic (native American inspired?) fantasy with amazing world building and fantastic characters. The writing is also so vivid and atmospheric, it sets the tone of the open wilds so well

Arc provided by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review

In a world where everyone can shapeshift at will, society forms tribes and factions - Deer, Fox, Boar, Bear. Battling for supremacy are the Tiger Tribe and the Wolf. Maniye is the child of a mixed heritage - Wolf Father and Tiger Mother. Living with the wolf clan she struggles to keep her secret hidden - that she can step into a Tiger skin as easily as she can wear the wolf. With these two sides of herself at war within her, reflecting the bitter enmity of both tribes without, this is an unusual and beautiful coming of age story set firmly in the realm of fantasy. I'd never read any of the author's previous works but I'm glad this is the start of a trilogy. The plot was just twisting enough, the pace was stream lined and swift and the unusual, young protagonist was impossible not to root for. I will definitely be on the look out for more of Adrian Tchaikovsky's books as well as waiting for book 2 with great anticipation.

The Tiger and The Wolf is a beautiful written and a really intriguing story. It took me a little bit to get into the rhythm of the book as the writing style didn't match my normal reading style. This book is a story that I wouldn't advise speed reading as there is so much details you will not want to miss a moment.

I did not no what to expect of the book when the story began, but this story is an epic Cat and Mouse (ok more like Wolf and Tiger) adventure. In the middle of the adventure you find out the Mouse is a lot smarter, stubborn and dangerous than original thought.

I liked Maniye as a character at the beginning I wanted to look after her, befriend her. As the book went I loved her plucky determination to survive and stay free.

I was surprised by the characters in the book and the decision they made, they made decision where complete opposite to what I thought the character would do. This happened a couple of times, and I ended up having to re-read the page to make sure I hadn't miss understood. This is a great reminder to not make assumptions.

Adrian has created a very brutal world in which if the 'people' do not kill you the elements will. This world makes the action more dramatic and makes the stakes even higher.

After reading Tiger and the Wolf, lets just say I have my parents and not Maniye.

I would recomended this book to anyone that enjoys Robin Hobbs writing style.

I give this book 4 out of 5.

I have to admit that I picked this book up mainly due to the stunning cover. The book itself did not disappoint, though. It is definitely quite slow at points as there is a lot of world building and other information that needs to be told. Having said that, I never felt bogged down by all the information. It was all necessary - it just set a bit of a slower reading pace. I love the setting of this book, with tribes that can 'step' into different animals. I also loved the main character, Maniye. She is such an interesting and complex character. The other characters are also extremely well written and I loved that all the characters have some mannerisms or indication of the animal they are linked to. The diversity of this book is great - there are so many different tribes and different beliefs. I really enjoyed finding out about them all. I very much enjoyed this book and I will definitely be continuing on with this series.

This story is about a world populated by people who can "Step" between human and animal form, the peoples of each animal forming their own tribe. The characters effectively behave more animal than human, and in particular we follow the story of a girl who has the souls of both Tiger and Wolf within her, as her mother was a Tiger and her father a wolf. She can "Step" between both forms, yet is effectively an outcast from both her peoples also.

I won't give much of the story away here. The story is fast paced, almost too fast paced at times, as we find ourselves feeling the exhaustion of the constant chase... but for me the main characters quickly became compelling and the story progresses to a satisfying climax whilst leaving me wanting to know what will happen next. Good show!
