So good!
reflective medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Character
Loveable characters: Yes

Two families deal with harsh realities of life and children growing up; sisters/cousins, women/the men the love, mothers/daughters also grow. Some for the better - and some are left struggling. One family pulls together as they deal with the aftermath of a brutal attack on one of their girls.
The other family is splintered - and continues to fall apart.
I think this book will stick with me  - and be haunting my dreams.

This was a really beautiful book. I loved the stories of the sisters and their families, even if the book really did deal with some heartbreaking material. I thought the characters were well done. They live in a world that is (thankfully) very far removed from my day to day experience, but the racism and violence they are exposed to is sad. At the same time, the book does offer some hope, and the characters are certainly trying to leave the world a little more full of love.

4.5*.

Such a powerful book. It covers such difficult and powerful topics from rape and racism to poverty and substance abuse. It was definitely hard to read at times. But truly a well written book.

This one has been sitting on my shelf for a long time. I knew i would have to be in the right mood to read it. It is a heartbreaking story that feels close to home for me. The setting is my home town and the story feels so real and similar to the stories of the youth I work with that this was a hard read.

Similar vibes to April Raintree.
