The subject matter is tough. However, Vermette’s writing is absolutely beautiful and the book is difficult to put down. The characters are engaging and multi-faceted, so the reader may even feel sympathetic, or at least some understanding, when terrible choices are made.

The weaving of Indigenous, Métis, and colonial/settler perspectives adds another layer of depth to this already masterful work.

I read “The Circle” first and liked it more. Perhaps the author’s style maturing and becoming its best? Vermette does an amazing job of creating unique voices for each character. Different perspectives presented with different feelings and truly distinct voices.
