amazing and evocative imagery. the details in writing the flesh and gore really make you squirm while you read this book byt unfortunately, the writing just isn't there.
i think i just needed to be 10 years younger to fully apreaciate this book, i just found it too simple and straightforward when it wasn't describing flesh and blood.
but i'm still glad this book exist. i'll be gifting it to my younger sibling who i think is more the target audience of this :)

- finally reading his backlist
- this was pretty good in the way that a horror movie is pretty good where you should look away but you can’t
- it wasn’t what I was expecting and not necessarily in a bad way but just too much Jesus for my tastes

Promising story. Some gems of writing. Interesting premise. But the overall execution fell flat for me. The story dragged & I didn't care about the characters. Just wanted the story over. Listened at 2-3x speed.
Slow, boring, repetitive, and relies too much on religious imagery/played out bigotry and cultish stereotypes instead of actual world building. Characters seem like cartoonish attempts at representation and even as a major lover of sci-fi, fantasy and spec fic etc. the whole thing just feels too absurd to get invested in at all.

I really really wanted to love this book. In the end, I'm glad it exists but it wasn't for me. I can see how the book would really mean something to a trans man reader. For me though, it didn't do enough with an amazing premise. The book felt focussed on inclusion (I LOVE INCLUSION) at the expense of exploring the world and narrative. The horror elements were okay, but I can't pin down why they weren't amazing. I wish there was more time put towards the other characters past the lead and his two love interests. I found that the idea of community was undersold by not having them be more interesting and diverse in their interests and thoughts.

Good, but a little unpolished, especially compared to The Spirit Bares Its Teeth by the same author. At some points it feels a little too much like a derivative work, as though this is The Last of Us 2 fanfic based on Lev and the Seraphites, but with queer Original Characters making up the rest of the cast.
