This was a surprisingly impressionistic view of war. I expected this book to be quite good based on it's reviews and it being historically ranked as one of the best pieces of non-fiction ever written, but even then it exceeded my expectations. This is Vietnam as told by a war correspondent that was there on the ground for a couple of years. It's pulled together from his experiences and articles he wrote while there. It's unlike any other story of war that I've ever read in that it is not chronological in nature, but it more of a painting of the war as a whole in small brushstrokes. It starts slow because you feel you're just getting tossed into the story, but after a chapter or to, you really start to feel the war for what it was. It's clear that our author is still haunted by the events of his time there. His writing is best described as a poetic nightmare, beautiful yet intense and somewhat frightening. It's no wonder that the defining movies on Vietnam like Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket were influenced by Herr's experiences and that he even consulted on their scripts. It doesn't seem like the author did much after this book, but he didn't really have to. He defined a war most others struggled to define and he did it in a way that nobody else could. I don't often say this, but this is a must read, it has a intense eloquence I've not experienced in a book before and it's left a mark on my soul with it's intensity.

A tých asociácií je milión, všetko so všetkým súvisí, realita a prítomnosť sa prelína so spomienkami a snami, spoza každého rohu vykukne nejaký druh hrôzy a nočnej mory.

Polskiemu tlumaczeniu umknela poetyckosc z jaka Herr pisze o Wietnamie a takze zargon i slang zolnierski, ktorego uzywaja bohaterowie.

The definitive account of the war and how it affected at least a part of the generation. However they came out it affected everyone. It is a pity that this sort of work was not also produced and circulated from the Vietnamese themselves; their suffering is less well documented and understood. An alternative view written in the 1980's describing how to fight the next war:Hunt R; Schultz Jr R Lessons from an Unconventional War Pergamon Policy Studies 1982

Sorry, just couldn't get past page 50. The author's style is simply not for me. I found it all over the place. No specific narrative, non sequitur paragraphs and sentences that were simply too disjointed to read. I have no idea why this book is considered so groundbreaking and amazing? Maybe it was when it first came out, but this style of writing is just not for me. I am also reading The Things They Carried, also about Vietnam. This is an incredible book, and far superior to Dispatches. If you have one book to read about Vietnam, pass on Dispatches and read this one.
