The Ship of the Dead by Rick Riordan

Overall score for this series is 3.5. A fun adventure that was certainly written by Rick Riordan. This is the last of his series (not including the new one with Percy) that I've read, and it made me realize no matter what mythology he's writing about, if you've read one series of his you've read them all. He follows the same formula but I don't think that necessarily a bad thing. Just... dull, I guess. Magnus Chase is one of the better ones imo though. I found the characters more endearing than the ones from the Kane Chronicles and the Trials of Apollo series.

Riordan is also someone I have added to my list of "Creators that I want to tell it's okay to retire characters." Even if it's just a short story or even only a couple chapters, really it's okay. I know people love them, but you don't have to shoehorn them in. There's only so much you can do with them after awhile.  Please, I beg you, let them rest. It's okay to move on.

I think this book is the shortest of the trilogy, and it definitely felt like it... but other than that, an excellent read as always!

(Also so... Magnus defeats Loki with the power of friendship? What kind of anime plotline is this?)

Okay so I can now say definitively that this series is the most fun I've had with a Riordan story since the OG Percy Jackson books. Riordan just does his best work with a humorous, kinda dumb, first person narrator. The stakes don't feel as high in this book as Percy Jackson, and the characters are not quite as vivid, but it's still a fun series. Without nostalgia to enhance my enjoyment I probably won't reread these books, but I'd wholeheartedly recommend them to any Riordan fans looks for something new.
