I never thought that Lara Jean’s story was over. I like the idea that when I close a book the story doesn’t cease, it’s more that the part that had something to tell me is over and now it’s time for those characters to live their lives without an audience. It’s a romantic way to look at reading but it’s served me well when it comes to finishing a series I love and not instantly feeling too sad.

It turns out that Lara Jean still had something to teach me. Whereas the first book in Jenny Han’s series about the young girl just trying to muddle through life was a reminder to step outside and take a chance sometimes, to let people in and to recognise your worth and the effect others can have on that self worth, the second in the series is about the past, about holding on to bad thoughts and experiences for too long and letting them get in the way of the here and now.

Lara Jean and Peter start seeing each other for real and not just as protection for either of them. They keep trying to make it work but she’s unsure and it seems that Peter’s ex, Lara Jean’s old best friend Genevieve is out to get them. She seems to pop up everywhere and then a mysterious hot tub video of Peter and Lara surfaces again. Peter refuses to believe it could be Genevieve and Lara keeps catching him out lying about seeing her. At the same time she steps up her time working at the retirement home and bumps into an old friend, another recipient of one of her love letters from the last book.

P.S. I Still Love You centres around Lara starting to realise that change can’t happen if she’s living in the past. Old loves may seem perfect but perhaps it was the rose tinted way we look back on our memories, old friendships might seem nothing now but that doesn’t mean they never meant a thing. It’s also an exploration of a relationship where one or more of the participants has been hurt before. Lara Jean has to realise that while Peter may not hate Genevieve as much as she wants him to, it’s actually her obsession with their relationship, her imaginings that he must be comparing them, that is holding their relationship back.

P.S. I love these books. They’re so full of warmth and love. There are so many great characters and real emotions that hit you right in that thing you’ve been avoided thinking about and I’m glad there’s another one for me to pick up when I’m ready.

Honestly, I had to take a month or so off from reading this simply because I got into a reading slump, but I finished the last half in half a day, so I'd say it's good. Honestly, though, I'm thinking she should've chosen John, even though his name is John.

★x4 | (B+) 87% | AGES 16+ | three words: John Ambrose McClaren.
I don’t even know what to say or think. Lara, I’m disappointed in you. The person you chose is so toxic I hate him.

| Characters - ★x3 | Like I actually hate this guy with a passion. The only thing keeping me from throwing this book at the wall was John. I hated the other guy.

| Storyline - ★x3 | gREAT. FinE. As good as a sequel can get.

| Writing - ★x4 | still the same as last time...

Should you read this? Listen, I’m sorry. This book is better than the first, but not by much. This book? Is so...toxic. I wish they didn’t use the word “s*x” so much. So loosely. I know I sound like a grandma, but seriously. Relationships aren’t all about that and I was not about this. I was really hoping for something wholesome between Lara and Peter, but if there was a nice scene, I didn’t get it. He had a more wholesome relationship with Kitty than anything. And that’s not even—you know what? I’m just gonna go finish the next book...get this series over with.

I think this book is pretty similar to the first, in a good way. I was so mad at Peter because of the whole
Gen video debacle
, but then John was a nice spin around the plot and I loved the story overall. I think it was pretty good and kept up with the hype that the first book gave me.
