Wavering between 3 stars and 4 stars. I couldn’t put it down - it was really good. Started one day and finished the next. But at the same time I feel like it could’ve been a little longer, a little deeper, a little more detail. Everything happened really fast and I feel like I watched a 2 hour movie that didn’t do a book justice and did the best they could without really including all the details that would’ve bumped it to the next level. It was a good read but I feel like it missed the mark a little.

3.5⭐⭐⭐.

It's been a good while since I've read a book like this, I did enjoy it and loved the premise. Some parts were a little slow to me, and it wasn't a shocker of an ending since I could figure out most of what was happening.

The characters I enjoyed the most were Sharon and Nikki, I loved the relationship between the two and how they were trying to solve what was going on as well as really supporting each other.

What we have in this story is neighbors who say they don't have a daughter even though Sharon has seen a little girl doing dishes in the middle of the night. An 18 year old has been missing for years and secrets are soon to be revealed.

Loveable characters: Complicated

This book was heartbreaking, anxiety-inducing and ultimately (mostly) fulfilling at the end. While something about (that I can’t quite put my finger on) missed the mark for me, it definitely was a page turner and I was glued to the end to find out what ultimately happens.

I think what was missing for me was Morgan’s story. The author spent a lot of time fleshing out people who ultimately would be kind of unnecessary to the plot line (ie. Amy, other than her initial introduction of Niki and Sharon, she really doesnt serve a real purpose to the plot line), when I’m still left wondering who was Morgan? Why did she run away and never return and who was she to Mia before she died? Was Mia even her real name?!

I feel like this book could have either been 25% shorter or filled that 25% with a sub-story line from Morgan’s perspective leading up to her death.

One big thing I did appreciate from this author was that she didnt go into unnecessary shock factor details of Mia’s abuse. It wasn’t needed to get the point across and I often feel like authors go overboard with the gory details.

It’s a decent weekend read.

The Moonlight Child by Karen McQuestion
Narrated by Stacey Glemboski

One of the genres that this book was listed under was Horror and that kept me from looking more closely at the book until I read Jayme's review and realized I'd probably like the book a lot. I think of this book as a "family drama", a very extreme family drama in many ways but I think that designation might be most likely to direct people to or from the book based on their genre tastes. The story is not Horror and it's barely a Thriller but it is a very interesting story when it comes to characters, their motivations, and the good and bad in people.

So often a story won't have many good people in it but I think I'm drawn to stories about good people more than stories that have almost no one good in them. Although there are flawed and a few evil people in this story, I'm struck mostly by the good in many of the characters. For all the badness that happens in this story, it is very much a feel good story overall, for me. I don't want to let go of the people we've met but I'm left with good thoughts about them, as life goes on in the fictional world.

The story deals with those who've lost their way, those who take advantage of others, and those who have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own. There are people who go to the ends of the earth to take advantage of others, those who want to do the right thing but don't know how to go about it, and those who will figure out what to do, even if it's not to their advantage. Maybe the story winds up more positive than real life but I hope that isn't the case. I really enjoyed the story and I think that Stacey Glemboski's narration was fantastic for this tale.

good read

i was a little confused at the beginning, but i do wish morgan’s family played a bigger part in the story.

This book is mis-categorized. I very much enjoyed it but I was not emotionally prepared to read such a story.

It was...fine? I didn't think the mystery was anything special but I did like that the foster girl did well at the mom's house with no additional drama. Everything was pretty easy to see and yet didn't really clear much up.

That ended exactly as I thought it would after realizing there was nothing supernatural about it. I also thought it was too long.
