Unfortunately, this book was a bit underwhelming, not a thriller at all. It'd categorise this as a family drama, with barely anything happening throughout the book. It started off quite well and then it was just boring. It picked up the phase towards the end though. I also didn't enjoy the overly descriptive writing.
It had some good parts however, so I'm rating it a 2.5 - 3*.
I'd recommend this book to people who enjoy slow burners.
medium-paced

A really random & surprising top read for me!

Sí voy a regresar, estaba interesante, solo que empece otros libros y quedó perdido en la inmensidad

Nicki a troubled 18 year who has been in foster care and aged out in need of a place to stay. Sharon has plenty of space and is living alone. She decides to take Nicki in as a favor to her daughter. Together they start to discover that their neighbors aren't who they say they are.

I love the bond between Nicki and Sharon. This book doesn't have any big twists but sometimes you don't need that to make a story good. I enjoyed itm

I just loved this book. I think I was expecting it to be more suspenseful/thrillery, but what I got was something that touched me on a slightly deeper level. While there was mystery and crime, there were also strong relationships, fully fleshed out characters, and a few tears shed at the end. Highly recommend!

While this book didn’t have a massive twist that I love in a book, it didn’t need it. The storyline, characters, and everything else was flawless. Well, except for the mother lol.

I would recommend this book to everyone. It’s definitely not a light read, but you want to be there for most of these characters and find out what happens.

A very domestic thriller that, while opening with an engaging premise, quickly loses its appeal through dull, tedious prose and repetitive, exposition-heavy dialogue. I think the plot suffers mostly from a bad case of showing its hand too early. Once the pertinent details about the plot’s central mystery start to show themselves, it becomes far too easy to predict where things are going to go and the story loses momentum. That said, the plot’s core thrust managed to keep me curious enough to see it through until the end, even though key reveals and events never really shocked me. McQuestion also spends far too much time early on introducing characters and ideas that pretty much vanish towards the end of the story, and including detail in the most unnecessary places. I saw another review on here say that this novel feels like it was written by and for a social worker, and I highly agree with that. There’s something almost bureaucratic about the way the storyline unfolds.
dark mysterious fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Complicated
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No

Even though this story was predictable at some points, I found it hard to put down!
The characters were so real! The plot grabbed my attention right from the first page.
The characters truly made the book. They're all unique and complex. Their stories started out separately, but they are weaved together, bringing them closer in an honest, unhurried way. Nothing felt forced. It all just moved along at a nice pace and ended in a way that felt good.
