I've never been a fan of Kirby's superfamilies (this, the Inhumans, the New Gods), but I was intrigued by the recent Marvel movie and thought this might be an influence. It was, but I didn't care much for the story. Gaiman is clearly reinventing the characters, but he's also setting the whole thing within a particular slice of Marvel continuity. (We get a lot of Iron Man and superhero registration.) The result doesn't feel timeless and, worse, gets confusing in terms of plot. I did like the Romita Jr. art, however --- it reminded me strongly of Frank Miller.

This book was pretty okay. It had the foundations to turn into something great, but just never really made it there. I'm a fan of Romita Jr.'s art, so that wasn't the problem for me, but rather the characters all turned out to be fairly flat. Things started strong and it really felt like Gaiman was delivering a fresh take on the Eternals, but it just never really came together in a way that made it feel like the stakes were as high as the narrative was claiming. All in all, I'm glad I read it, but I don't think I'll ever feel some driving need to revisit these characters.

This all starts very well - regular people begin to have dreams and encounters that clue them in to the fact that they are actually Eternals (one of Marvel's Kirby-created races). The first couple of issues introduce the characters and bring them together well, and I really enjoyed them. But it all kind of falls apart after that; I'm not sure what they were trying to accomplish in terms of a lot of the characters. Also, it's hard not to notice that Gaiman has a definite bag of tricks he pulls things from - the two Deviants are essentially written word for word as though they were Croup and Vandemar from Neverwhere, for example.
Props do need to go to the colorist, though - particularly on the flashback sequences. They managed to do an incredibly retro color scheme in a beautiful fashion.

Meh? Don't get me wrong, the artwork is beautiful and I love the set up of this story but it feels like it's all setup with little payoff. It feels like a 2-hr pilot for a tv series, you know? Still, I am curious enough to pick up the next comics in the series.

The externals is surprisingly hollow given Gaiman’s involvement. The art seems inspired by Kirby and is playful but, as has been noted, relatively blocky and lifeless.
The story is intriguing, but jumps to conclusions relatively quickly providing little time to develop character and theme.
Good not great.
