I’m not sure what I expected from a book titled “History of Magic” but this included a lot of real world history under Hogwarts class names. I appreciated the ingenuity of this sort of education, and I did learn a great deal, but the audio was not super conducive to all the included pictures (though they were well-described). My mind also doesn’t process informational anecdotes quite so well in audio form, but I did like the interviews with real people involved in this project, and we got the most Harry Potter content at the end. Well done project for sure, just didn’t engage me as much as I wanted to be engaged.

Doesn’t entirely work as an audiobook but I also think reading it wouldn’t entirely work either.

A wonderful insight, not only into Harry's magical world but into those that inspired it, the magic that has filtered through ancient belief, folklore and culture. Fascinating, educational, and inspiring, there is something incredible about breaking down such a phenomenon, and being given the chance to more closely examine how one person built its existence.

This was a weird book, totally not what I expected and unfortunately this time not in a good way. I read the “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” (not the screenplay) and because of it I was expecting an in universe book, as in the textbook Hogwarts students were required to have. This book was not it. And it's not like it’s bad, it's quite interesting actually, but I found the mix between bits of J.K. Rowling biography and genuinely interesting history of “magic” etc. a little bit confusing and to be completely honest off putting.

Also, someone really liked the artist whose illustrations have been used in this (for the Harry Potter bits and not the history bits as I assume that were original artwork from the museum), as the author made sure to prise it whenever it appeared.

All in all I did enjoy reading the history bits and didn’t mind the rest all that much but was still disappointed in it.
