This book was a very quick read, as I expected. It was gory and fast-paced and did keep me on the edge of my seat with enough plot-twists to keep me waiting on how the main character would get out of every situation.
However, and this is a big however, some of the choices the author made did not sit right with me at all. I've read one book by Taylor Adams before and realized now that, similar to the other book I read, I don't know how I feel about his descriptions of the "big bad evil guy"
(or in this case about one of the evil guys)
. Specifically regarding the looks of these people. While yes,
Ashley was described as rather handsome in this book and he was clearly the main manipulator here,
I had huge issues with the ableist language and ideas in this book that were never properly addressed. Darby specifically
believes Lars to be the kidnapper from the beginning because of his looks and the way he acts because because she stereotypes it as more than "regular creep" behavior (which is a wild thing to say to begin with). It's never addressed that her thoughts immediately go there, especially because she's proven right, at least partially, and then continues to think in the same way throughout the book.
Additionally, ableist slurs are used by multiple characters and the portrayal of Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders feels very stereotypical without much agency of the individual and in pretty cruel language in my opinion. It's a shame because the book could have been fun otherwise, but this didn't sit right with me and I don't know if I'll ever pick up another book by this author.

Overall - 4/5. I had heard this book was pretty solid and it wasn’t a lie!! I really really enjoyed this. Weird beach read because it was based on a winter storm - but still fantastic! I’d definitely recommend - as it was a thriller that I didn’t actually predict the twists and they weren’t super obvious either. Maybe a tad repetitive - but still a great read! I would say a bit more graphic than your usual thriller - but not too over the top for your average reader.

I’d definetly add this to your TBR if you are looking for a fun thriller (but maybe wait to read it until winter).

I really enjoyed this book, a real roller coaster of a read with twists throughout. A bit gory at times but thoroughly enjoyable.
