I really wanted to like this book. So little is out there that offers such an intimate view of Aleppo in what would ideally be an easily accessible format. Was it a failure of translation? I suspect that some fault may lie there, but issued such as seemingly random appearances of unexplained yet obviously important characters can't be the work of shoddy interpretation alone.
I only got through a third of the book before giving up out of sheer frustration. No reader should have to work so hard to find the story.

Tragisch. Interessante setting en personages, maar het was wel heel veel, en lastig te volgen omdat het allemaal door elkaar liep. Plus ik vond dat er wel op een bepaalde manier gepraat werd over zaken (specifiek seksueel geweld en het ouder worden van vrouwen) waar ik me niet comfortabel bij voelde. Ook is het RAAR dat de verteller alles wist van zijn broers/zus. Niet heel realistisch lol.

Yazarın, kıymetlisi Halep ile vedalaşması gibi bir kitap. Aşık olunası bir güzelliğin, değişimi-dönüşümü-çöküşü ve bu çöküşün müsebbiplerinin gerçek yüzleri -iktidar- üzerine.
Suriye’nin 63 yılında yaşadığı ve 8 Mart Devrimi olarak bilinen, Baas Partisi ve Esad ailesinin ülke yönetimini ele almasıyla yaşanan çöküş sürecini; evin babasının Amerikalı bir arkeolog ile Amerika’ya firarının ardından dağılma yaşayan bir aile hikayesinin akışında anlatıyor. Baskıcı, tek tipleştirici ve dışlayıcı yönetimin altında “öteki” olarak kendilerini bulmaya çalışırken insanların nasıl kaybolduğunu, farklı uçlara savrulup hiçbir yerde kabul görememeyi çok açık anlatıyor. Öyle ki insanların nasıl tarikat-radikal oluşumlara tutundukları, kendilerini-ailelerini red noktasına gelmelerini ya da nasıl muhbir olduklarını anlayabilir hale geliyorsunuz. Böyle karanlık bir ülkede eşcinsel olmanın, kadın olmanın, cinselliğin, aşkın, kardeşliğin ve aile olmanın ne demek olduğunu da öğreniyorsunuz.
Psikolojik olarak yıkıcı, umut tüketen ve bir toplumun kısa bir sürede ne seviyede bir dönüşüm yaşayabileceğini görmenin şokuyla insanı sarsan bir okuma. Kitapta çok yoğun bir diyalog yok ve zamanlar arasında çok hızlı bir geçiş yaşanıyor, bu da bazen kitaptan kopup, bir iki satır geriye dönüp yeniden okumanızı gerektirebiliyor. Suriye’nin yakın tarihine biraz yakından bakmak isterseniz mutlaka okuyun.

Sort of a One Hundred Years of Solitude for a Syrian setting, a novel that jumps through time following the members of one family in their trials and tribulations, seeking a meaningful life. This book is deeply sad and at times unsettling, but beautifully and thoughtfully written. I'm afraid meaning and fulfillment are elusive in this story, but the desperation, obsession, love, and regret were drawn in a stark and raw prose that will be difficult to ever forget.

I found the theme and a lot of the events described in this novel interesting and informative, as they give a lot of insight on the daily lives and social atmosphere in Aleppo and Syria in general, in a certain period of time (50s to early 2000s).
The book shows different aspects of a society living under a dictatorship, many of which would not be obvious to someone not knowing what that implies.
The characters in this story change allegiances, beliefs and their way of acting throughout their lives. I found this one of the most interesting elements in the book, but, on the other hand, I found the way these shifts in ideology and behaviour were not described deeply enough so as to render them clear or true, or authentic, whatever one may want to call that.
I had the impression at times, of an accumulation of facts, events and changes narrated very swiftly, but without enough room for reflection, without enough detail to let the reader understand fully why those things are happening.
I also expected some insight on the consequences of the present conflict in Syria, but the time period covered is previous to the beginning of the war.

It took me awhile to get into this book for a couple of reasons. One, the subject matter is distressing, and two, the narrative jumps around in time without warning.
I was reading this book for book club and was worried I wasn't going to finish when I suddenly realized that I needed to know the fate of the characters. I'm still trying to decide if this was the result of good writing or rubber neck syndrome where you can't stop yourself from gawking at the train wreck.

رواية مزعجة جداً، لم أتخيل أن الإسهاب بالأحداث الدرامية سيشدني ولكن لسبب ما انتهيت منها بشعور كبير بالإهانة. كتاب صغير مضغوط ومملوء بالكآبة والخوف والألم.

كنت قد بدأت فيها منذ أعوام ولم أستطع إكمالها وتركتها لوقت آخر إكرامـًا لزميلتي التي أهدتني إياها -كانت مشمئزة منها في حينها ولم أفهم السبب إلا بعد أن بدأت في قراءتها- ولكن بعد لفة أخيرة قررت أنه لا..لن أكملها ولن أضيع وقتي في قراءة مثل هذا الغثاء
كمية غير مفهومة من الجنس والإباحية والشذوذ بدون مبرر!
ألهذا قامت ثورة سوريا؟ ياله من تشويه! ياله من استخفاف بأرواح ودماء من ماتوا في سوريا!
