This book is a lot of things.
Painful, emotional, beautiful, definitely strange.

I have a review on my blog over here: http://mlvreads.blogspot.com/2016/04/review-mud-vein-tarryn-fisher.html

Fisher said herself that this book isn't for everyone, and I get that. I honestly had no idea what to expect going in, but I had just THE BEST experience reading this. I will always cherish this book as one of my favorites. I am carrying it with me in my heart and mind every day. I'm actually compelled to read it again (and I might have read the first 10% over the last couple of days here and there). If it were a movie, I would've probably watched it 10 times by now. There's just something about it.

Spoiler I will admit that I was surprised at who had kidnapped Senna and Isaac, but it also totally makes sense. I know that this book appears to be a thriller about people trapped in a cabin trying to survive and make their way out, but the prison is definitely more psychological and emotional than physical. The situation they are in is so similar to the situation Senna is in at all times in her heart and her mind. Fisher nailed so many awful and beautiful feelings on the head. Ultimately, the prison was meant to bring peace to Senna...it just did it in a terribly illegal way. And yet you know it helped her. She leaves the book (and she is leaving life) at complete peace and knowing true unconditional love both for someone and from someone. I love that things didn't really "resolve" in the end. Some things are just not meant to be at that time. But I have no doubt that the thread between Senna and Isaac is stronger than anything and will always keep them together.

It was a right place, right time book for me.

I noticed the ratings that people either loved the book or hated it. Sadly, I have to go towards the negative side. I wanted to like it so bad because I really loved her first trilogy and how Colleen Hoover raved about it, but am left disappointed. It was a painful struggle to get through and left me feeling depressed. It's well-written(the only reason for 2 stars), but it completely fell short for me in so many ways. I couldn't stand the main character. at. all. Yes, she had a hard life and crappy things happened to her, but damn. I hated that it was a mystery you can't figure out, yet the mystery wasn't as much of a twist as I thought(if that makes sense)? It all fell completely short, especially the ending! Ughhh. Also, titling it after the shit line in shrimp (even after the explanation that we all have darkness in us) ... just no. I need to find something more uplifting to read now...

I honestly have no words.

This book was incredible. I can't form the sentences to explain how I feel right now, and I don't know if I'll ever be able to - but I'll try.

I had no idea what to expect when I started reading Mud Vein. I definitely wasn't expecting to become completely obsessed to the point where I struggled putting the book down for longer than a minute. This is one of the few books I've read that has scared me; really, truly scared me. And I don't even know why. It was a journey of epic proportions, and my emotions received a cruel and unexpected beating. Explaining this book is difficult. Honestly, I don't even know what genre I'd call it - it's so many things, its everything, and ugh, I can't. I just can't.

Just read it.

Man, I seem to be in the minority here but this book really didn't make me feel anything. Was it engaging? Sure. Did it keep me busy for a while? Sure. Was there a clear plot going on? Sure.

(I think Tarryn Fisher is just not an author I enjoy. I DNFed one of her other books and gave 3/5 for her other one.)

But as far as thrillers go... it wasn't very thrilling. I really would have enjoyed this more if it focused on the "past creeping up" and "what ifs" and MUCH less on how victim-y Senna is. (also if you plan to read this check TWs)

Spoilery rant ahead.

Spoiler Ok WHY is Senna going a little crazy?? that always seems like such a cop-out in thrillers! Wow, strange and mysterious things have been happening. HA it's just because you're going psycho!!

Fisher just kind of touched on the fact that Senna had gone to a psych ward? and also casually "oh yeah, your psychiatrist is also a little psycho" and ??? the ending felt real forced.

Also Senna as a character REALLY got the short end of the stick. I think we're supposed to feel sorry for her (?) but DAMN, she got sexually assaulted, breast cancer, estranged family, broken leg, asthma, and "do I love him or do I not?" all at once? Give her a break! I was really annoyed by her the entire time and began to feel bad for Isaac who was doing his BEST to keep them both alive!

And what was the point of the mother's book? It didn't even show up later on, just kind of brushed off like "oh I guess someone else read the book written by my mother, a famous author, how surprising."

I am very upset.

This was a little different read for me. Not the typical, boy meets girl, they have mind blowing sex and then HEA !! The authors writing is wonderful, detailed and thorough. It was a great story which kept me at the edge of my seat, guessing what would happen next. And as much as I guessed (which I am usually great at), I was never able to figure out what happened. This book was truly refreshing, entertaining, imaginative and clever. I would definitely read more from this author.
