Audiobook. I don’t usually go for crime books. However this one has been on my radar for a while. It is told very well and the author’s personal story adds to the interest. I’m sorry she didn’t live to see him arrested but her legacy lives on.

I really didn't enjoy this book at all, but i'm also not a fan of true crime anymore either. The fact that the author died be dotee it was finished was a few marks against the book. It was choppy & unorganized.

Captivating and a page turner through the vast majority of the book. Slows to a halt in the last 2 chapters.

When we think of folks with obsessions, this reality show world tends to think of unhealthy hoarding or someone making and marrying a puppet. For the true crime aficionado, obsession is a fine quality and our heroine is Michelle McNamara. Her career was full of fact-gathering about the East Area Rapist and the Original Night Stalker. This book, published she’d posthumously by her collaborators, details the volume of details she had gathered and the posse of investigators she wrangled to her charge to not drop the determination t solve the problem.
The version I read was published before the EAR-ONS was finally (we believe and solemnly hope) was arrested. This collection of activities is a compelling documentary of a search. Proud to have a first edition for my shelves.

I'm terrible at writing reviews, but this was simply one of the best books I've ever read. Michelle had a way of pulling you into this story, placing you not only at the crime scene but in the mind of the victim and in the mind of the Golden State Killer, then transporting you back to her conversations with investigators. Despite the timeline jumping around, I never felt lost, instead following our reliable narrator.

I find it incredibly sad that Michelle passed before the GSK could be caught and I hope that Patton Oswalt got to ask him the questions Michelle had.
Also, was not surprised at all that the cops said she had nothing to do with catching the GSK and that it was all them. Like, of course they refuse to give up any credit.

Chilling. Obsessive. Resolute.
This is the true story of one woman, a “DIY detective,” determined to unmask a monster.
For years, the Golden State Killer eluded capture, hunting his victims in the dead of night. He was cunning, violent, sadistic, pure evil.
And yet, he was just a man. He bled. He shed DNA. As technology improved, Michelle McNamara knew, he was bound to get caught.
How and when justice was served will break your heart.

It's well-researched and well-written, and I respect the dedication if investigative reporting like this, but true crime is just not my genre.
