I liked the diversity of the characters and the trans representation, but overall felt the book was boring. It wasn’t written in a super compelling way that drew me in. I almost didn’t finish it, but wanted to see how the main character continued to develop. This is definitely more YA than advertised.

It was … fine…

I appreciated the trans representation in a fantasy style novel. But everything else was kinda mids.

The story wasn’t overly exciting or captivating. As others have noted, this definitely is more of a YA novel. It felt disjointed & way too long.

I really wish I'd read this instead of listening to the audiobook as I really didn't like some of the choices the voice actor made. I didn't love that the witches literally 'cackled'.

While there was a lot to enjoy about this book and I loved Laurel and her journey toward claiming her identity, something about this book just didn't quite work for me. The plot felt a bit like 'and then...' with things happening to Laurel that largely remained outside of her control.

Still, I'll read anything by this author.
