Not really feeling it. Possibly could come back at some point.

I sat in the parking lot several times just to listen more to this book. I can't describe it better than the blurb....it was very good at making me picture a scene vividly and interestingly. (I often skip the lengthy descriptions most books need).
Would recommend it.

The tears at the end are of pain, joy and the beauty of knowing what makes us human is what makes us capable of not only the worst cruelty but also the greatest and most profound kindnesses sometimes wrapped up in the same person. There are ways to be free when in chains and cages that never leave you no matter where you run. It depends on what you choose.

Well written book but very, very dark.

An absolute literature gem. Literary fiction is not my type of read, but this book has just the perfect amount of magic realism to turn this grim and yet beautiful plot into one of the most amazing and bittersweet stories I’ve ever read. Redemption and cruelty in the worst of places, among the worst of people, presented to us with one of the best writing. Believe me; you want to read The Enchanted.

“What is it in our world that breeds such howling despair?”

“Even monsters need a person who truly wants to listen - to hear - so that someday we might find the words that are more than boxes. Then maybe we can stop men like me from happening.”

“I want her to pretend that I never happened-I was an abortion that went undone. I want to tell her I wish I could take it all back, fold back into the womb, erase myself into a seed, make myself obsolete. Never have been, never was here…”

How do you rate a book like this? On the one hand, it is a beautifully written novel. On the other, it is incredibly sad. Almost the entirety of this book takes place in a prison and the author does not shy away from the horrors that happen there. She tells the stories of the men who broke when they arrived there and the ones who were broken long before they ever got to The Enchanted place. The narrator is childlike in his fantasies of the prison and he made my heart ache from start to finish. I don't know if I would recommend this book to others, but I'll leave my review here to help you decide for yourself. I don't feel like this is a book a reader is supposed to enjoy but to appreciate. This one will be sticking with me for quite a while, I think.

Lyrical, beautiful… but too dark for me. DNF.

This book was disturbing. I did not know what I was getting into. Do NOT read this book before going to sleep. It will give you nightmares. The disturbing parts of this book were fitting, given the setting and characters. But the disturbing parts were truly awful! The flip side is that the words this author uses are absolutely beautiful! The first page sucked me in with its flowing, descriptive, symbolic words. I read it in one sitting because I had to find out what happened next. Ok, I skimmed the last several chapters because I couldn't stand the disturbing parts, but couldn't stop reading either.
