I'm not a fan of memoirs and autobiographies. I don't really enjoy reading the ghost-written stories of celebrities' childhoods.
I did enjoy this book, however. Probably partly because I'd never heard of Damian Barr before and partly because it is written very well, and captivates the reader like a good novel does.
3 stars from me.

Moving memoir that cleverly ties into Margaret Thatcher's time as PM. Violent, sad, funny and poignant, this book takes you through a wide range of emotions. Lots to think about, especially as to why difficult childhoods can impact individuals' long term outcomes so differently. Would definitely recommend

This is Damian Barr's early memoirs. We follow his rough upbringing. We see him struggle with his sexuality growing up in a not so pleasant environment. He was surrounded by instability and violence. I related a lot to the gay elements in school and how survival was a daily experience. This is heartbreaking and inspirational in equal measure. There are some really funny bits too. This is a great book. I can see where books like Shuggie Bain and Young Mungo were probably inspired by this. I really want to read his other books. I think there is a new one coming out this year and the other semi-memoir book as well. This gets a resounding 5/5.

Amazing he survived that horrible childhood.
No one thought to communicate anything to their children. From one day to the next you have a stepfather you didn’t even know existed.
And the fear. Why didn’t he tell his dad what was happening? Or a teacher?
And what was left unanswered: why did his parents split up.
So happy he got out of there alive.

For a memoir this was absolutely fascinating and I have no idea how damian made it out alive but like am I being stupid or is this proper pro-thatcher? I can't get on board with stuff that's nice about her because I hate her so much (the best thing maggie thatcher ever did was finally die)!! So yh don't know how to feel about that side of it?
