The story is at times challenging but John Green's writing is so poetic that it goes along so well with the deeper meaning of the book.

1.5 for the good bits. It just wasn't very good. It was like if one of those 2013 I'm a tragic bad boy love interests were gender swapped. I cared for noen of these characters and everyone was annoying and kinda pretentious.

After reading three books of Mr Green, I can comfortably say that I don't like his style ..

A sad, happy and wonderful story of friendship. Now I've read all of John's novel now.

"I don't know where there is, but I believe it's somewhere, and I hope it's beautiful."

I've read the last few pages thrice and it still struck me strongly even after the third time. This is such a powerful story that revolves around people with strong and polar personalities. I decided right when I chose to read this last among the 4 in the set. The story is both captivating and strking and it is impressively written. I loved Alaska's spontaneity, the Colonel's confidence, Pudge's rawness, Takumi's depth and Lara's genuineness. And with all that being said, my answer to Dr. Hyde's (Alaska's) question "How will I ever get out of this labyrinth of suffering?" (Bolívar) is this: There is no definite way out because each one of us has a different labyrinth to escape from. This means that like everything in life, getting out of the labyrinth will be dependent upon us. And by means of our different views in life, we will eventually find the way out, if we will it. We should all "go to seek the Great Perhaps" (Rabelais) because maybe, just maybe, that is our way out of the labyrinth.

Alain de Botton said, "Most of what makes a book 'good' is that we read them at exactly the right moment that is meant for us". That's something I adore about books and it makes me happy that I read this book at the exact moment that it was right for me.

The overall message and lesson you can take from this is great but the romanticization of a troubled and traumatized teenaged girl is something I can’t ignore.

This is my favorite book of all time, and I've read it a few years ago, but I chose to read it again for a class project. John Green simply has a way with words and is the king of incorporating mental health into stories without making the entire plot revolve around the characters' personal issues. I just have WAY too many positive things to say about this book, so I'm just going to cut it short and recommend it to anyone reading this right now!

*update on 12/09/2020 (4th time reading): i read the Deluxe edition this time & LOVED the Q&A section
