This read like a daytime TV drama. We never got deep enough into the characters for me to root for them. Story was fine

Couldn’t put this down! Constant action and leaves you on the edge of your seat. Characters, pacing and plot were solid. I would expect nothing less from Sandra Brown. Only reason this isn’t 5 stars is to how the bad guys were handled at the end. Seemed to easy. Otherwise a great thriller/mystery. Can’t wait for Outfox next month.

It was okay. I love the mystery and the romance. The ending was really rushed.

I've read several of Sandra Brown's books and enjoyed them, but I abandoned this one after about 150 pages. Maybe it gets better but I wasn't invested in either the plot or the relationship.

A freight pilot and a doctor on a race to deliver a secret box amid chaos. The book hits the ground running, with them being rightfully wary of each other. There's snappy banter and heated glances as the brash loner Rye had his world crashed by the beautiful, evasive Brynn. The romance technically plays out over 48 hours (but felt slow burn), but SB is so good at building the chemistry and sexual tension between them. Their feelings felt believable, as they learn to understand and trust each other. The sensual touch in their romance fits really well.

Rye is great, beneath the asshole exterior is a heart of honor and gold, and he would do anything and everything to protect Brynn. Brynn felt less fleshed out at first, but I learned to appreciate her strength and determination. Lots of enjoyable twists in the suspense. Wished the epilogue was longer, though.  CW:

This is what I would call a slow burn, not in a sexual way, but a suspenseful way. A good romantic suspense should keep you waiting for the next shoe to drop while creating some sexual angst with the characters. Sandra Brown definitely did that in this book.

The first half of this book is almost painstakingly slow, however there is just enough mystery to keep the reader looking forward to what will happen next. Once this book hit about the halfway mark, things took off like a rocket. It goes from a slow burn to a high speed chase.

I enjoyed this story and the characters. The combination of mystery and romantic suspense kept me turning the pages. I was in the book right along with the characters. There were many times I thought my heart would pound right out of my chest. And I wanted a happily ever after for all of those who deserved it.

Overall, this book is a good read. Romantic suspense lovers will thoroughly enjoy this read. Those that love a high stakes mystery with a little romance will also enjoy this book.

Eh, maybe this just isn’t my type of book. There were times I liked it more than I thought I would but not enough to make it a book I liked. I couldn’t believe how long this plot was dragged on-I felt like nothing happened over the first 250 pages and suddenly the last 100 pages everything happens. And by everything I mean not a whole lot.

I enjoyed this overall more than I expected to. I thought the writing was okay, but what really sold it for me was the pacing of it, which was very good. It’s definitely a page-turner; there’s something big happening every few pages, the dialogue is snappy, there’s just enough glimpses of the villain’s thought processes to fill in the gaps but the twists are decent, for the most part.

I liked the two main characters, but I possibly liked Rye a little more than Brynn. I think that’s just because he had more personality to me; I thought he was compelling in his own way and I liked how he was unpredictable sometimes in terms of how he behaved
SpoilerI really liked the fact he surprised the hitmen characters sometimes, such as in the motel; but the one that really stood out was the part where he ambushed them outside the lift with a fire extinguisher.
Brynn was okay - I did like her motivations and that she wasn’t quite as passive as she first seemed. Her backstory interested me more than his
SpoilerI thought the scenes with her father were actually quite touching.

Their relationship was good; there was a lot of sexual tension between them. It’s quite a slow burn, but the sex scenes were good and it really paid off for me. The slower pace of the relationship worked well as a contrast to the fast pace of the suspense plotline too.

The suspense plotline was interesting - it wasn’t quite what I expected and it did keep me guessing. That said, I thought the ending had maybe too many twists.
SpoilerThe scene where the villain characters were all left alone became almost comical as it turned out they were playing each other - but I genuinely was shocked that Goliad turned on Delores.
It just felt a bit muddled towards the end and
SpoilerI didn’t like that Rye was separated from the final showdown for as long as he was. It made it a bit anticlimactic.

The writing was a little stilted at points, and it wasn’t very descriptive (although I.think it was very good at setting the scene of gritty, seedy places). Also, this isn’t a criticism in one sense as it was just my personal wishes but
I actually found myself liking Goliad and I was disappointed when he died. I was a little disappointed, too, that his reason for turning against Delores was to do with his loyalty to her husband - I think I’d have preferred him to come to the conclusion his affection was misplaced, maybe because he found out Delores was willing to murder a child to achieve her goals? Maybe? Also, plot-wise
was there not an easier way for Delores to do most of the things that happened in the book? Including kill her husband? It just felt a little convoluted once it was all revealed.

Overall, though, I enjoyed reading it. It was a pacy romantic suspense novel and some of the twists and turns were really good.

I would recommend it if you want a fast-paced romantic suspense novel with the forced proximity trope and a lot of twists and turns.

What I loved most about this book was the sarcastic humour, the banter. That was really funny. Otherwise the book has some nice action, it's entertaining and keeps you wondering...until it doesn't. The idea of "people with money are mean and corrupt" is getting a bit old.
