If you don’t like this book you just don’t like fun. I laughed way too many times, and yet it was fantastically thought-provoking too. Only knock is that I feel the galaxy jargon was pushed a bit further than my liking at times, though of course that’s part of the fun. Quotable for days, so I’ll just pick three that I loved.

Quotes of the Book

“Time is an illusion. Lunchtime, doubly so.”

"For a moment, nothing happened. Then, after a second or so, nothing continued to happen."

“He gestured Arthur toward a chair which looked as if it had been made out of the rib cage of a stegosaurus. ‘It was made out of the rib cage of a stegosaurus,’ explained the old man”

I would just like to take a second to praise whoever decided to pair Stephen Fry’s demure, whimsical nonchalance with Douglas Adam’s chaotic maximalist humor, this audio-book is a fucking gem that should be recommended listening for children 13 and up. I absolutely adore the shit out of this.

Reminds me of a novelist who’s work is slowly becoming very important to me, Miranda July and her characteristic ‘train of thought’ approach to narrative. This isn’t quite as intrusively personal as her work (very few pieces of literature are), but it does manage to capture the flitting sensation of being in a stranger’s head, one foreign idea morphing into another, and then folding in on itself, seemingly shaping itself into something entirely new. Adams manages to jump back and forth between light-years of space, moments in time and a myriad of existential concepts with the wit and cadence of a veteran late night comedian setting up punchline after punchline in one long meandering narrative. It’s brilliant to watch and all of it is nicely accentuated by Stephen Fry’s soothing voice and mastery  of booky comedy as he describes beings with Godlike abilities and names like Slartibartfast. Fucking genius, bravo.

So funny and clever I loved this book, it felt like a privilege being able to read it for the first time. Arthur Dent is a very lovable character and I can’t wait to read the rest of the series
