I’ll be honest. I didn’t cozy up to Christopher immediately in [b:Somebody Killed His Editor|6542216|Somebody Killed His Editor (Holmes & Moriarity, #1)|Josh Lanyon|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1387769434s/6542216.jpg|6734470]. However, this time around I was fully engaged and appreciated his insecurities, his self deprecating humor, and his warring desires between trying to build something with his renewed lover JX or to call it quits due to his fatalistic expectations.

Somehow Christopher finds himself embroiled in the dramatic life of his long time mentor, Anna Hitchcock, who asks him to covertly discover who might be trying to kill her. Of course, this puts Christopher in mortal danger and in the mindset that he just might not be ready to completely let his relationship with JX fall to the wayside. As JX comes to his aid and the two try to figure out who could possibly want Anna dead, they uncover some surprising and horrifying secrets.

As usual, Lanyon delivers on the smart writing. Here the mystery is quite convoluted but well thought out, assigning motive and means to all characters involved, keeping everyone, including this reader, on their toes. Throw in some romantic proclamations, more revelations, and hopefully the future impetus to kick Christopher’s ass in gear regarding JX. Of course, I look forward to reading more about this duo as they progress in their feelings and find themselves in the various ludicrous situations they just can’t seem to avoid. That doesn’t necessarily benefit them, but it sure does make for some fine entertainment, and I look forward to it.

Upon rereading, I found that, although I wish Anna got her comeuppance publicly, I like that it didn't end entirely neatly.

What a delightful witty read
uplifting, interesting and fun

WHODUNNIT & what's the story with those two

It reminds me of crime & dine mysteries when everyone is suspicious & has a motive for the crime in question (when really, these games use classic mystery as base)

The audiobook by Kevin R. Free was perfect - he nailed the characters essence, timing, tone & general mood- I laughed aloud

Great writing (information distribution, single POV, romantic moments, word play)

The mc is so dramatic & sassy - I love him

The characters have their flaws and fits lol but the general vibes are kind & gentle & caring
and tender 🫠

Autor pak nezapomene přihodit i nějakou tu vraždičku... dvě... tři...

Osobně, pokud hledáte nějakou tu oddechovější, a ne příliš náročnou detektivku, můžu tuto knihu, jen doporučit. Sama si tak rozhodně nenechám ujít ani další díly, s touto povedenou dvojicí.

This is probably closer to 4.5 than 4 but not close enough to 5 to bump it. I liked this one more than the first one, the twist was better in my opinion. What I found most interesting how Holmes goes from "even if they were terrible people, you can't get away with murder" in the first book to (excuse me for the minor spoilers)
Spoilerbeing unable to say who the true killers is and finding out vigilante justice was served.
It makes me curious about the 3rd book.

OMG! the ending!!! I wasn't too sure about this story considering it started with our MC's breaking up. However, the mystery was twisty and our boys are reunited with spectacular results. I quite enjoyed it

My favourite part of Josh Lanyon stories is always the relationship progression between the characters. It's a rare author who is confident enough in their skills to write a slow and normal paced relationship developing between two characters, without wrapping everything up in a nice little bow by the end of the story.

I wished for just one more chapter at the end of the book, and confess to reading the last few pages a few times to see if I'd missed something in the implied ending, but in all it's a very satisfactory mystery-of-the-novel story that still sets things up nicely for the next book.

I read this last August, I can't believe I've forgotten to shelve it.
