A brilliant and must-have dictionary for Tolkien fans but also very useful for people who are reading his books or plan to. There is information about pretty much everything; places, trees, birds, creatures, elves, men, dwarves, and many more that I am not even going to bother to write. The descriptions are usually short but very informative. Some are longer than others such as Elves, Valar, Men, Bilbo Baggins, and other more important characters and places. Thus, whenever I need to look up a word about Tolkien's works, I am going to read this book instead of using the Internet. On top of being a great dictionary, there are a lot of illustrations about the characters, places and so forth. The only thing that bothered me a bit is the fact that they are all in black and white. I have David Day's The Dark Powers of Tolkien and the illustrations in that book are all colored and the overall design of the book is better in my opinion. Finally, I think this is a brilliant book if you want to easily access information about Tolkien's world and also a very good piece to have as part of a collection.

Of course I haven't read it cover to cover. Which idiot would? Okay, maybe a lot of people would, but I did not. However, it is a wonderful, wonderful book and, despite what many people think, is as close to Tolkien truth as possible to get.

The Dictionary is definitely a good book for every Tolkien fan to have! It offers a lot of background knowledge and an overview of many places and characters in Tolkien's world.

However, I felt that some characters and places were left out of the Dictionary. For example, King Thranduil (Legolas father) was mentioned several times and did not get his own entry, which I felt was somewhat strange.

Despite this, I was quite happy with the Dictionary and hope to use it in the future when reading Tolkien.

Arranged in a traditional A-Z format, this book is literally a dictionary of all things Tolkien. From each mention of a character (and sometimes a character is listed under multiple names and has multiple entries), to each location, every battle and flora and fauna. I appreciate David Day's effort in creating this work, as it really does cover every bit of Tolkien's world in a well laid out and descriptive reference. However it could have been far shorter if instead of creating so many multiple lengthy and only slightly reworded entries for the same topic of different names, he had simply written "Mithrandir - see Gandalf" "Olórin - see Gandalf" etc etc. Still, this is a great resource for those that may want to delve deeper into the world or have forgotten how a specific character in The Silmarillion fits in with Middle Earth.

Will be very helpful while reading the books because J.R.R. Tolkien likes to go on tangents and it’s hard to remember every like every king Gondor has ever had. Will especially be helpful for the Silmarillion, because the main characters’ names all start with the same letter and gets confusing.

Very informative and well-organized! Reading this is almost like rereading LotR and Silmarillion again. It's well-worded with lots of phrasing taken directly from the books.
A great reference book with beautiful illustrations!
