“Once upon a time, in a land long since burned to ash, there lived a young princess who loved her kingdom...”

This book had so many wonderful moments. This book gave you everything you needed and then some. It also tore my heart in half!

Okay it’s been hard to write this review because I am not ready to say goodbye to this series yet. But a billion stars. Okay why not? A billion stars for you.

There are issues, don’t get me wrong. I personally didn’t like that Aelin lost most of her powers (although it was expected, I just thought it would be at the very end!). I was really looking forward to an epic fire battle between her and everyone else, and I was a little disappointed I didn’t get it. I still enjoyed how they finished things in the end though! But a little disappointed and little frustrated cause I feel like the whole lock thing was a totally pointless side quest that didn’t amount to anything.

I felt a little bit of a disconnect between the savage battle that the North was facing and losing, and then the random quips occurring with Aelin and gang. Also Aedion was a total dick, Lysandra was in an absolute impossible, dangerous, and totally unwinnable situation. I know he felt betrayed but I don’t think he had to be so cruel to her.

I think Gavriel’s death was completely unnecessary. That’s all I have to say to that lol

All those things aside, it’s still a billion stars because I loved it so damn much anyways.

The 13’s story line was… I can’t describe the heart break I felt, all the pain in the actual sacrifice, the descriptions after, the realization that the curse broke, and then each time Manon had to tell someone what had happened.

“You will not find them. In this sky, or any other.”

I mean 5 days later and I’m still crying thinking about this.

I also loved that it really was Evangeline that won back the Kingdom for Aelin, this really melted my heart as well. And really overall, even though it wasn’t what I had wanted, Aelin’s final stand was still epic. I love her standing with the cadre and I loved them working together to defeat the real Bitch Queen. Also of course Aelin coming to battle on the stag was just epic fantasy *chefs kiss*.

The book hangover I feel right now feels insurmountable. I am reading Reddit threads, looking at memes, reading the extra chapters, looking at merch, and even thinking of reading Fanfiction. I just want more. I need more of Manon and Dorian. I want to see Rifthold rebuilt and what happens with Hollin and I want to see the dealings between Orynth and Rifthold and I just want more dammit!

As a final word, my head cannon event is that when Aelin goes through her Settling in a few years she gets back a huge portion of her magic. And maybe we’ll get another book with that and her going off to save some others that call for aid.

What an emotional journey this book was! I have cried with pride, with happiness, with love, with sorrow, with grief, with heartbreak, and everything in between.

So many times through this book I have been so worried about the characters and the bleak, hopeless situations they have found themselves in, praying for a miracle for them.

Some of the deaths in this story genuinely broke my heart and I was so sad to see how those close to them were truly devastated, really ugly cried at these.

But, despite the awful situations our characters frequently found themselves in, there was still so much love, fun and banter to keep me smiling and enjoying the book. I thought some of the chapters in this book were so impactful (65 I’m looking at you) and I really enjoyed them. I’ve finished the book feeling so proud of the characters, their development and their story, and just honestly think what a worthwhile read.

I’d say to anyone who might be struggling with the earlier books (like I did), it is honestly worth pushing on as the last half of the series has been incredible! I don’t know how I’m going to pick my next read to follow up this! One thing I do know is it needs to be a small book as my hands are aching from holding the weight of this one open 😂😂
