A Ruin of Roses

I really wanted to love this book. The first couple of chapters seemed promising, fast paced and laid down the basics for the FMC. I tried SO HARD to look past the internal monologue but the writing felt very juvenile, all I could picture was Bugs Bunny as her internal voice “th..th..that’s all, folks!”

Finley: had really high hopes for her character. Lots of intrigue when she discovers her connection to her animal. Strong, courageous, rebellious. Very well read and uses her knowledge to become a healer. But it seems like where character falls short, the author fills the space with her animal rather than developing her character. Lots of internal struggle between her animal’s lust and her will to hate her captor.

Nyfain: misunderstood alpha protector. Emotional trauma driven. Constantly treads the line of control with his animal. Says how if it wasn’t for his animal’s intense desire for Finley’s animal, he wouldn’t be interested in some low-born commoner because he’s a noble

Deliciously dark twist on Beauty and the Beast. The tension between Finley and Nyfain is off the charts hot.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF@56%- I couldn’t do it. A lot of people on booktok recommended this book, but it’s just not for me. I found the dialogue to be cringey, the time frame (medieval but also somehow post apocalyptic?!) to be super convoluted and the incessant vulgarity to be a bit too much.
According to other reviews the spice is great, but I didn’t end up getting to read much of it because wading through the rest of the book became too much of a chore.

The sense of humor in this book threw me off a little but overall it was a fun read.
