I’ll give it 2.5 ⭐️ it was kind of an odd book? Idk what to say honestly.. just odd..

The FMC is too perfect.. like all FMCs.. she has everything going for her, she’s stunning (but doesn’t want to be judged by her beauty), she’s smart, resourceful, brave, self-assured. One parent is dead, the other is on deaths doorstep, so she’s taking care of the family. Ok, Feyre.

I also found it odd that her “inner shifter” is like an alternate personality lol.. they speak to each other

From the bottom of my Beauty and the Beast obsessed heart, I wanna thank author K.F. Breene for the absolutely amazing swag box and gorgeous paperback copy of this fabulous fairytale retelling! All thoughts and opinions expressed below belong entirely to me.

As a devout lover of all things Belle and Beast since before I can remember, I was hooked on this dark fantasy romance literally from the first page. I have read countless BATB retellings and this was by far the most unique, but still so true to the original. There are TONS of fun Easter eggs throughout for those in love with the original Disney film, but of course with a spicy twist at every turn! My favorite aspect? DRAGONSHIFTER BEAST. Need I say more?!

The heroine of this one was so badass and well developed; even from the start, I felt like I knew her and couldn’t help but relate to her every thought and decision. I love that her skills as a healer came about because of hard work and study; her expertise is unparalleled but you can tell it’s because she has devoted herself to the science of it for the betterment of the village, which I found so endearing.

Once in the beast’s castle, I was in awe of the lore of it all. Breene is brilliant and has spun such a haunting tale with the most colorful cast of characters! I felt all the Masque of the Red Death vibes, with bold colors, gothic energy, and nonstop smut galore. The ending of this installment left me reeling and begging for more, and I am so happy that an ARC for book 2 just recently hit my Kindle because I don’t think I could wait much longer for things to keep heating up!! Definitely an 18+ read, recommended for adult fans of dark fantasy romance.

Holy Wow!

Amazing beginning! A curse made by a demon king has made people not shift and get sick and die but Fin lol ey created an elder to help but it doesn't cute the sickness. The prince, Nyfain, and his people don't age. They are basically frozen in time. What happens when these two meet is just hot. Hadrieil is so funny. Love this story! Can't wait to see what happens next.

a pornographic fever dream masquerading as an irreverent take on a classic story.

i laughed through it and not in a good way, but sometimes possibly in a good way? i feel very kombucha-girl about this. i can't tell if i stockholm syndrome'd myself by choosing to finish it, or if my soft, stupid romantic heart can't help but enjoy reading a relationship develop, regardless of the bizarre inner dialogues of the main character and the questionable quality of any of the characters who make an appearance in this book.

will i read the next one? yes. will i enjoy it? probably not, but i am physically incapable of not seeing things through to their end because of the potential for things to turn around. sunk cost fallacy wins again.

As per the authors note at the start this didn't seem like it was intended to be a masterpiece of fiction. It felt like the author was having a lot of fun.
my main critique was when Finley was "speaking" to her shift beast there was no indication of speech marks or itallics to differentiate the inner voice and the creature
Is this a Beauty and the Beast retelling- yes. Is there a sickly father/family she is trying to save-yes. Is there a lot of sexual content- yes but not too much from our main character. Nyfain is a mysterious man who we learn alot from during the book with decent pacing on their building tension. I will continue to the next book as the world does interest me and I want to read more of Hadrials crazy dialogue.

I was just not into this one. I didn’t really feel connected to any of the characters at all and the “romance” between the two main characters felt… weirdly forced. The writing/dialogue felt very YA despite the random extra spicy scenes. Idk… I had such high hopes for this book/series and I feel so disappointed by it.

DNF - this was terrible. I wish I could give it less than 1 star. Such a good premise with tons of possibility but the writing was awful - the worst I’ve read in a very long time. I will steer clear of this author from now on.
