i put this book down and was overcome by the violence every word held, even the very simple and seemingly incorrupt ones. as i was reading, i was captive to the book. i couldn’t look away nor could i fully take it in.
the first half is descriptive, clinical, and cold, though laced with haunting prose. the metaphors are unavoidable. there is so much tension in the rituals of cleanliness, of purity, of the shaved white skin, covered from the sun. right beneath, wrapped in white gauze, the wound which spreads, pungent. then there is the horror of knowing exactly what will happen to a girl in this story, because everything is a mirror of itself, it all comes back in a different shape: we saw the insects and we understood.
the second half is just as haunting, even though it is opposite as far as the access to the main character’s inner life goes. still, the images are the same: the dog, the howling, the girl, the gasoline, the armed men, the uneasiness. you can’t escape any of it. what life is under the apartheid regime imposed upon palestine is clear in reading this book. through it all, is prominent the matter of history being colonized, as are the people, as is everything.
minor detail is an incredibly poignant, harrowing and well-written work, one which rings true in all it is.
(also i read this because of beatriz and emma’s reviews, which i couldn’t forget, so thank you !!!)

RE-READ: Re-read for my essay, but I knew I wanted to re-read this novel sometime anyway. It's great to have noticed things I hadn't thought of before.
FIRST READ: This book makes me want to go and read more around the subject. I need to know more. In that sense the book, despite its small page count, served its purpose.

A heartbreaking and necessary read. Free Palestine

A slim, yet impactful story. Told in two parts, with narrative from an Israeli soldier and Palestinian woman. I think that author did a perfect job from a storytelling aspect. Sadly, I read this while in a pretty big book/life slump, so I think reading it slow over time was not the best way to take the story in for me personally. However, I could see a re-read in the future, especially to really dig into the parallels between each part, as well as the author’s reasoning.
