An original but it's been bettered
No doubt hilarious in its time but it's been done over be over again - Bridget Jones and Adrian Mole will be more accessible to the current reader. It's beautifully written and I loved the characters but Delafield's world of hand made dresses and domestic staff is difficult to relate to. And as for the scene with the kittens...of its time.

I'm not even sure how this is possible - this is the most relevant piece of fiction I've read in the last five years. The Provincial Lady doesn't have a smartphone, a washing machine, or even a fridge. I don't have kids or a cook and I am not a Provincial Lady by any stretch of the imagination, but I found pieces of my own life on display here.
From my perspective 80 years in the future, I wanted her antagonistic husband to get up off his ass and go do something. Mr. Provincial Lady is the laziest, most indifferent son of a bitch around. He doesn't seem to have a job, what with being well-bred and all. His family is living in genteel poverty and he falls asleep behind the Times. I am glad his type seems to be quite rare these days.

Murder of kittens by drowning upset me.
Moderate: Animal death

I enjoy epistolary novels, so I was keen to read Diary of a Provincial Lady, and I very much enjoyed the provincial lady's wit and snark. Admittedly, I flagged a bit as it felt a bit longer that it needed to be. This was my first E.M. Delafield read, and I am keen to read Tension at some point this year.

It’s as if Sue Townsend and Helen Fielding got together and wrote a book. Delightful!!

I took this book off the 'humour' e-shelf. The explanation had 'the Bridget Jones Diary' thrown in. I didn't finish it. Too slow.
It does however give an insight of life between the 2 wars. I had to go for 3 stars. I would give it an 'it's Ok' 2.5 stars
