What a unique story. I’ve read lots of twists and adaptations of Jane Austen books and I don’t think I’ve ever read one based on Northanger Abbey. And thats not surprising, despite my love of Austen Northanger Abbey is definitely my least favorite.
I got Ghosted from NetGalley awhile back and wanted to read it now because I was considering purchasing the author’s upcoming book Dashed. I already own two books by this author and hadn’t read either yet! It was definitely past time. And when I started this book, my first thought was, oh shoot. I hope I’ll be a fair judge of this book since I don’t enjoy creepy things and Northanger Abby is low on my list of Austen books. But good news! My only regret was letting this book linger on my tbr stack.

There’s nothing creepy about this book. It’s quite emotional actually!

Hattie goes to Northanger Abbey which is a school that’s famous for being haunted.
Hattie’s mother is the no-nonsense dean of the school. And she treats Hattie just like a student rather than a daughter.

One day Hattie’s mom sets her up on a school project with the new boy in school Kit. He is actually in school on a kind of ghost hunting scholarship. And he gets paired to do a project on ghosts with Hattie who is very anti-ghost.

Hattie’s reasons are very personal. Her dad believed very strongly in ghosts and him and Hattie shared that love and interest. But Hattie’s dad died three years ago and Hattie lost her love of ghost hunting because of it. There’s a big, very fair reason why she felt she needed to let it go.

She tried to reinvent herself as her mom’s perfect little overachiever. She has a few friends that seem like transactional friendships (one way more than the other. I’ll never believe Izzy was a true friend.)

But she stays closed off from everyone until she gets to know Kit. She feels like he’s the only one who sees her as she is.

She’s definitely got some sad family dynamics. I think her relationships improved overall by the end of this story.

There was something I wanted to happen in this story that didn’t happen. Maybe it was never realistic but I was kind of rooting for it anyway.

I’m between 3-4 stars on this book so I rounded up.

I look forward to reading more books by this author.

This is a YA retelling of an Austen novel that I fully admit
I am not familiar with at all. However, that didn’t detract at all from the story since I had no basis of what could/would happen.
My favorite parts were every single piece of the ongoing grief of losing a parent. It doesn’t go away and it doesn’t affect everyone the same way. I loved how that was a huge thread throughout the entire story and I definitely saw some of my own grieving process on the characters.
I would 100% buy this books and read it multiple times, which to me is one the the highest compliments for a books.
The slowburn romance is written very well, and the unknown WHAT Hattie wants to do with the future seems quite realistic.
Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ability to read and review this books.

Flipped back and forth between audio and digital format. I liked both honestly. The audio voices are good, but sometimes its just faster to read words than hear them.

Interesting plot, I liked the FMC more than the MMC for the entirety of the book (whoops). I think the inter-familial drama was way more interesting than the romance or even the ghost stuff. I really connected to the grief and the sibling dynamics, the distance between the "ones who remember" and those who are too young to know. There's a lot of good "background" plot to chew and I wish we had lingered more there. The romance ends up being the catalyst for change to help the FMC deal with her family drama and her friend drama, which I'm glad for, but wish we had seen a bit more ending for them as much as we got happy ending for the pairing.

Worth the read for sure! I don't remember enough about the source inspiration to know if it connection works at all.

DID NOT FINISH: 19%

I really tried with this one. I love Jane Austen, I like ghost stories. But I just couldn't. I started in and it was boring, I didn't like Hattie...liked Kit more but this was told from Hattie's view so there wasn't enough of him. And maybe it's because I went to a public High School...but I have never heard of an ambassador...again, maybe just me...so this whole thing felt ultra forced from the jump.

Too bad...I was really excited for it. But finally gave up after I had it out from the library for literally months without picking it back up.

I will update with my review once the SMP boycott has ended.

In the meantime... #SPEAKUPSMP has three demands:

Address and denounce the Islamophobia/racism from their employee.

Offer tangible steps for how they're going to mitigate the harm this employee caused.

Address how, moving forward, they will support and protect their Palestinian, Muslim, and Arab readers, influencers, and authors in addition to their BIPOC readers, influencers, and authors.
