DNFd this like ten years ago because I didn’t like the main character, I now read books about f*cking psychopaths half of the time. Oh boy how the tables have turned… Mary actually sounds quite nice now.

It was interesting reading this oh-so-familiar classic as an adult. I had a bit of a different perspective on things I glazed over as a child. I always loved the book (and movie) growing up but times are very different now. The way I viewed Mary and her upbringing was majestically different now vs pre-teen me. I also didn’t acknowledge how the “magic” of the garden could be perceived as other things/entities. My teen son just read it for a school exam so I’m looking forward to discussing it to see how he perceived the characters and cultures.

I loved this book. I wish I had read it as a child; it carries a powerful message about your outlook on life, one I hope children (and adults) can still learn from. It made me want to plant a garden, or at least spend time in one, and reminded me that I need to spend more time outdoors, while also driving away the dark thoughts that sometimes creep in.
