DNF the first time, tried again after watching the TV show and finished it this time. Interesting concepts but not sure about execution. Some parts were definitely a slog.

It was the perfect sci-fi book till I read 70% of it. Then it became science fantasy. To some extent.

But it is extremely well-written. The author is fantastic.

hard sci-fi that, for me, was pretty easy to follow. i thought the plot and embedded themes were fascinating. i also enjoyed the prose & even some of the characters (like Da Shi, hilarious guy to me)
the scene towards the end in the field with the locust felt incredibly emotional to me for some reason. humanity may be bugs, but bugs always escape elimination
i enjoyed it!
however, the entirety of the book was clearly a lead up to the next. no climactic events whatsoever, though personally i didn’t mind (though i can see how this was annoying to others)

I can’t do it.

I don’t understand it.
The characters are flat and forgettable (not to mention the sheer number of them)
I made it 120 pages in and have no idea what’s going on.

I’m so disappointed because the reviews are phenomenal. I think it’ll be better on TV. 🤞🏼
