Writing was good but confusing at times. I didn't like Carosse at all but he was written well.

Just an excellent, excellent novel. Kind of scary when one recognizes how masterful Greene works with such simple language. His confident control of pacing and narrative form is seamless.

A great novella. Compelling and vaguely disquieting

extra great introduction that included outlines/sketches for other novel ideas.
really quick fun read, with turns of phrases that just make you salivate like the sound of fat heating in a pan.

Chavel and 29 other men are imprisoned during the war and are told by the German's that they must pick three men to be shot the next morning. The first 2 men take there lots rather well, but when Chavel draws the 3rd he panics and offers everything he owns if someone will take his place. One sick young man takes him up on his offer and makes out a will to transfer everything to his sister and mother upon his death. Then the story follows Cheval after the war ends as he tries to redeem himself for that one cowardly act.
This was a compelling little novella, only mildly confusing at times for reasons I can't explain due to spoilers, looking forward to reading more from this author.

Finurlig liten sak fra Greene dette. Ikke den beste boka jeg har lest av ham, men god nok for en kveldsstund :)

A peaceful ending rather than a happy one
