I don’t know what genre this book is, and I don’t think the book knows either - I went in thinking fantasy/magic but got neither - maybe a hint of science fiction, but I don’t feel comfortable calling what happened science. While nothing was particularly wrong with the plot or the writing, I constantly felt confused by the purpose behind anything that happened during the overall quest the book centers around. She’s trying to get to “the sea” to accomplish some unspecified task for some unspecified reason that will maybe save everyone in some unspecified way, and then at the very end all of the details are thrown at you but it it wasn’t even exciting enough to be worth the wait.

I feel like 2.5 stars is being generous. Without spoilers, this is basically a dumb girl doing dumb things for about 70% of the book. Kind of an interesting twist (did you know this was a sci-fi book and NOT fantasy?), but the twist was unsatisfying and made me roll my eyes quite a few times. It ends in a way that makes me think there's a sequel, but I hope not. I adored Winterwood, so I am very disappointed with this book.
A wonderful, quiet moody book. Ernshaw has always set a wonderful mood and setting that I love settling into. This world wrapped around me like a blanket.
Shout out to the star names Lyra! My dogs name :)

2⭐️. It’s a no from me dawg. I didn’t hate this one but I did think it was trying to do too much - romance? fantasy? sci fi? historical fiction? sort of literary? pick a lane or two, my dude. I think the plot got a bit lost in the sauce so I was pretty bored most of the way through. I did listen on audio and liked the narrator, but despite that maybe I would’ve done better with the print version? Idk. This cover is so pretty and I can’t help but feeling a LITTLE BETRAYED but it’s fine I’m fine
Shea Earnshaw always makes me want to unravel the mystery. Always set in a modern dated world. Always an X element. Very good. Very enjoyable. Glad to have found this author.
