The central romance between Rhys and Dallas was great. I really liked both characters — Rhys the grumpy dragon shifter who starts the book seeking vengeance on the witch who killed his sister, and Dallas the innately *good* witch who Rhys has been asked to protect for plot reasons. I especially loved how Rhys was went from a little wary, to the quiet “mine” motions, to “MINE!!” I mean, that’s the only acceptable dragon shifter behaviour really.

Honorable mention to Willow, Dallas’s pet dragonling, who was the cutest thing ever! She had the personality of a rambunctious puppy and it was ADORABLE.

One thing that didn’t work for me was how much word count was used on the side characters — especially King and Aurora (who will be the main characters of a future book). I might not have minded so much if I’d read this series in order, knowing it would have a more ensemble feel.

The second book in a fun-to-read series

We have here the brother of Lachlan, the dragon of the first book, and I was therefore curious to see him fall in love with a witch when he hates them !

It's a book that I read with pleasure but like the previous one, it's just entertaining (it lacks angst, depth and drama for me to love it ><)

In short, a pleasant read

Ancient Enemy, the second book in the Ancients Rising series is an enjoyable read. It focuses on Rhys, the brother of Lachlan, the hero in the first book. Rhys is driven by revenge against the witch who killed his younger sister and his search brings him to New Orleans. There, while in Kings territory, her is paired us with Dallas, a witch who has skill in creating gardens and growing crops. Plus, Dallas has the cutest pet dragonling, which adds some sweetness to the story. Rhys and Dallas have really good chemistry and their journey is well worth the read. They both have baggage they have to unload and the author does a great job of bringing the reader along on their journey and keeping them interested and engaged.

I'm looking forward to the third book to see how the next story plays out.

I voluntarily read a digital advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher through Netgalley. The opinions expressed are my own.

I just started this series last week with an arc for book 8 and I was so intrigued I decided to check out more books. So far I am loving it.

This story gave me a lot of background info that I missed out on. I really loved Dallas and Rhys as individual characters and as a couple. Of course Willow stole the show! Like a cute little dragon as a pet? What's not to love. I like that although this is paranormal it takes place in New Orleans, as I am not a huge world building fan. I really love the background characters in the story too. I can't wait to read more. I am especially excited for Aurora and King's book.

I can see this becoming a comfort series for me.

I'm cheating and counting 3 books from this series under 1 review.

Ancient Protector
Star is a world-famous singer and also a secret, elusive phoenix shifter with a past life where she almost mated with Scottish dragon laird, Lachlan. Now, he's awake from hibernation and ready to mate his long-lost woman no matter what. I enjoyed this one the same as AE because the stakes felt higher (rescuing Star's sister) and the found family dynamics with the band/crew were fun. Plus, New Orleans is also a great paranormal setting.

Ancient Enemy
Rhys has spent millennia chasing after the witch who murdered his sister in a blood magic ritual for immortality. Dallas is that witch's daughter - a kind and goodhearted witch who just likes to grow things and play with her pet dragon (the whole pet dragon thing was weird since the men are dragon shifters). I liked the dual tension of Dallas thinking Rhys will reject her for her parentage and Rhys having to decide if Dallas matters more than vengeance, but otherwise this was forgettable.

Ancient Vengeance
I love an enamored and emotionally stunted (and virgin!) MMC. This one had Alpha Night vibes (but not nearly as good). Although Rhodes was an assassin turned simp from the first moment, Stella wasn't interesting to me and the plot was completely flat otherwise.
