This is my favorite so far in the series.

Another fine Horowitz and Hawthorne murder mystery. Definitely didn’t guess the twist, and a new scene of the crime (Alderney, of the Channel Islands) made it a bit more interesting. I guess I’m still coming to grips that the author wrote himself into his own novels for a series of detective stories.

Quick read! Pages are small with large text and it was an easy story to get into. As always you never guess the ending and I liked how well you get to know all the characters. Only thing I struggled with was that the scenery makes you feel like it should be based in like the 18th century but there are all these references to modern day. Overall a good read!

Months-later-review: Decent! But this entire series is not nearly as memorable as Horowitz's Magpie Murders series (excited to see that there's a third book to that series coming soon!)

This series by Horowitz is a treasure.

Hawthorne is the ex-policeman who now "consults" with the police on solving murders. Horowitz is the writer who goes along with him and the interplay between the two is sometimes strained, often comedic.

I didn't suspect the identity of the "bad guy" until very near the end, which is good.

This is a light, easy read and quite enjoyable.

Well, I didn’t anticipate that at all!!! Like, even a little. Nicely done, sir! This series just gets better and better.
