Never saw it coming and the ending left me really needing Horowitz to get on and write the next book.

I am sad about how disappointed I was in this book! I have a deep love for Horowitz and his past stories, but something about this one missed the mark.
The inclusion of Horowitz as a character in the book began as a fun addition I was excited to see through, but he ended up being a character who got constantly humiliated and belittled by those around him. There were also so many plot lines to follow that at first felt understandable but ended up becoming jumbled, especially with the reveal of the killer.
This book didn't hold the same punch as other Horowitz's. It felt like someone struggling with the legacy they'd started to craft with these characters. Or maybe I struggled with the smart-detective-who-is-always-one-step-ahead and brings a completely new solution to the murder at the very end.
I also felt weird about the random comments about race and N*zi history. I couldn't see the point, honestly? It felt like weird throwaway lines.
This is not a very well-written review because honestly I'm sad about my feelings towards this book.
