bad twist didnt need the girl to be groomed by her uncle in order for her to want to murder her aunt. Pedophilia should not be a plot twist
medium-paced

didn’t see the twist coming. plot had me on the edge of my seat. i love a good unreliable narrator. wish the ended was flushed out some more, just to clean up all the plot lines. it seems like it was rushed

This was a very solid thriller; it kept me guessing until the end. And I truly didn’t predict the twist, which should bring this book closer to 4-star territory for me. However, once the truth came out, the wrap-up felt sloppy and rushed, with unresolved storylines left hanging. I thought this novel had a lot of potential that was left on the table in favor of trying too hard to create a tie-in with the author’s previous book ([b:The Silent Patient|40097951|The Silent Patient|Alex Michaelides|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1668782119l/40097951._SY75_.jpg|59752778]). I enjoyed most of this book, for the most part, and loved the Greek mythology stuff.

This book was so confusing, and it wasn’t because of the plot. It was the characters, their relationships, their actions, and basically everything within the story that just continued to baffle me. I constantly kept asking, “what’s the point of this person, or this event, or this other thing.” And by the end of the book, 90% just goes unanswered. It felt as if the author just put random people and places and events together to throw the reader off the scent of who the true murderer was. But there’s ways to do that while also developing the characters and plot in a way that makes the reader be drawn into the world and drawn to the people - one just has to look at any Agatha Christie book to see an example of this - and this author completely fails at this. The characters felt undeveloped and thrown in haphazardly. The main character kept making random guesses about people’s personality and character that just made no sense with how the other people acted. But by far my biggest issue with this is seemingly every semi-important male character’s sexual actions with Mariana (Edward, Fred, Julian, Henry all had some examples of this versus Theo (who had two scenes), sebastian (how interesting), and morris). It was gross, uncomfortable, and most importantly for a story like this, unnecessary. To make matters 100 times worse, the author is a MALE. It’s like he wrote the all these guys to be weird and creepy for one of two reasons: he’s trying to connect with women and show female readers how he understands their issues, or two: he’s just as creepy as the characters, or three: it’s both of these. I cannot emphasize how much anger that makes me feel.

Anyways, not a great book. Would not recommend. Also, the top low reviews for this book are perfect and explain everything much better than I did.
