This was my introduction to Turgenev. I was looking forward to the book, because he was Russian author I hadn’t read before, because it was about love, because it was novella and I needed something short at the time. I did enjoy the story, and I felt for Vladimir, but it didn’t engage me completely. I’m not sure why, as the story ties itself up beautifully, and a little heartbreakingly. Perhaps it’s because I didn’t sympathize with or understand Zinaida very much until the end, and then it was too late to invest in her. I expected more, and came out with a worthwhile read that was just average.

I thought it was very interesting to read. I normally don’t like literature books, but I really liked this one. And I don’t know why, maybe it is because I am really interested in Russia and the author is from Russia.
I really like the development of the main character and I think it describes the first love of a person perfectly. He is really head over heals with her and she has several worshipers who are also head over heals with her. She loves the attention and likes to play with the guys. You get to see how the main character builds a connection with her and the other boys.
He looks up to his father a lot, even tho I think he isn’t the best father because of the way he behaves towards his sun. But it is different to read it from his point of view and how he thinks his dad looks like, who he presents, etc.
Near the end the main character finds out something that I kinda saw coming, because in the beginning of the book I read a specific bit and thought: ‘Wait, I know what could happen!’ and it happened so...
But I think it is very interesting to read and I think that Turgenjev describes really well how first love feels and how losing that can effect you as a person.
