An easy, quick listen. Really not a bad story, but there a few things that aren't clear although they're not huge issues (I think) like what kind of illness does/did Alex have? Apparently it's been a huge deal his whole life but they never say what it is...
Would recommend.

I am a huge fan of Scholastic's multi-platform series such as the 39 Clues and Spirit Animals. This book and new series was no exception.

In these books Alex Sennefer has always been a sickly child. So much so, that he almost dies. Actually he does die but his mom, an Egyptologist, uses the newly discovered Lost Spells and her mysterious amulet to bring him back to life. Problem is the spell also cause other things to happen including the rejuvenation of Stung Man. When Alex's mom disappears it is up to him, his friend Ren, and Dr. Todtman to take care of Stung Man, repair some of the damage, and find Alex's mom.

As a 1st book in a series one knows there is going to be an inconclusive ending but I felt this wrapped up well. The Egyptian lore will appeal to readers who like the mythology. The book was relatively short and full of action. This will be a series I will have in the library.

A new Scholastic juvenile series launching as a hybrid between the 39 Clues and Rick Riordan's Kane Chronicles. This is certainly a first book in a series. Lots of plot and character set up but the concept is sound and I think it will resonate with the desired reading audience.

For kids book this was pretty good. You can definitely tell that this is middle grade but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. Alex is a Boy Who has been sick is whole life and is dying and Has a best friend in a mom. He dies and his mom using Egyptian magic brings him back to life. She then shortly disappears and he and his friend and his mom's friend go on a mission to stop the newly risen mummy and try to find his mom. They stopped the Evil mummy but do not find his mom a. As the book in their planning to go to London To try to find his mom and stop another death Walker.

So I started this all like "yaaaay fun, adventure, middle-grade to end my evening!"
And then I realized, "yaaaaay fairly accurate depiction of chronic illness, dying children, and survivors guilt!"

So not what I was expecting. But good! Really exciting, very fast-paced, and good characterization. I especially love Ren. I love how she and Alex understand each other because they've both spent so much of their lives pretending to be something they're not: healthy and clever. Just all around very cool little things that make a huge difference to how the book reads.

The copy I read was 1.) an ARC and so I don't know if it can be registered online, and 2.) not mine, so I didn't bother trying. But I love the idea of the online part of the book. It's a great concept.

Good book, definitely one I'd recommend for my students, and I'm interested to read more of them!

Similar style of 39 Clues, but this newish series is like The Mummy for kids. It was cute and enjoyable. A good quick read.

As an adult reader, I give this book 2 stars, but my son and I listened to the audiobook and he loved it. He is VERY excited to keep reading the series and that is all that really matters.
