Such a cute little book that hit on some tough subjects. I loved seeing the ways the characters all interacted with each other (even the ones on the other side). I was eager to hear their individual stories. It even had surprises at the end. Good writing. I could really picture the little town and the apartment court yard.

I want to live in this book and be friends with these people. It’s been awhile since I teared up when a book is finished because I didn’t want it to end. I am so glad that Sarah Addison Allen is back. I love her beautiful stories, and this one was delightful.

Publisher’s blurb:

Between the real and the imaginary, there are stories that take flight in the most extraordinary ways. Right off the coast of South Carolina, on Mallow Island, The Dellawisp sits—a stunning cobblestone building shaped like a horeshoe and named after the tiny turquoise birds who, alongside its human tenants, inhabit an air of magical secrecy.

When Zoey comes to claim her deceased mother's apartment on Mallow Isalnd, she meets her quirky and secretive neighbors, including a girl on the run, two estranged middle-aged sisters, a lonely chef, a legendary writer, and three ghosts. Each with their own story, Each with their own longings. Each whose ending isn't written yet.

I have this book 5 stars because it made me cry at the end. The Dellawisp is a place where some people who think they are broken find each other. Everyone has a story. Even the birds and the ghosts. I found myself rooting for these characters. The story is not complicated but it's sweet. There were a couple of twists at the end, but most of the story was not terribly unpredictable

Well, I am wildly guessing about the date I read this, certainly within a few days of publication. I have enjoyed Sara Addison Allen books so much, and due to personal circumstances, it has been a long time since she wrote a book. In the meantime, I have enjoyed following her Facebook account, where she presents small stories, describes the possessions of her late sister and mother to her niece in a series of letters, and offers pictures for story starters. Other Birds has a bit of the Allen magical realism; it is set, as usual, in South Carolina; and it weaves together the lives of several people with broken wings and an urge to fly into their lives. There is a little confusion with the differing narrative voices sometimes from the same person with a different name. I didn’t think that was as successful as it should have been. But the relationships that grow are ones you root for, and the setting is wonderfully rendered, a specialty of Allen’s.
