A delightful story of found family and even a bit of a bildungsroman. Zoey is finally on her way out of an unhappy home in Tulsa, with a distant father and a cold stepmother. She has inherited some cash and an apartment from her deceased mother and it's on a quaint island in South Carolina.  On the island, she meets a cast of characters that is comprised of other folks from broken childhoods, even in the small set of neighbors she has at the apartment.  Zoey becomes the instigator for them all to connect in surprising ways.

Too many pov shifts, dude. And to characters that I'm just so wholly uninterested in, it's not even funny. And if it then doesn't even contribute to the plot...
Is it just me or is it not incredibly obvious that the bird is her mother's supposed 'spirit'?? Like, she started seeing it just after her mom died and it has a weird reaction to this place, where, what do ya know, her mother used to live??? Apparently this will be a big reveal later, which is just stupid.
For the most part, I was just bored, I gave it a good try, we're moving on.

The buildings blocks of this book were all really me— ghosts, birds, found family, small town, murder, mystery, multiple POVs…. But this didn’t work. It did too much and not enough. It felt underbaked and too quick but somehow was 300 pages. The pacing also felt off— I found some elements too quick and all tell
No show whereas other moments dragged…. Unfortunately not a hit for me.
