I had no plans to binge this book, and yet binge I did. This was such a sweet book about love and friends who become your family. I’m a sucker for a good misfits book. I love how short it was because it just added to the sweetness of it. But if we’re being honest, I would have been totally happy if it were to go on for 200 more pages.

This one is 3 stars for me. I’m still not how I feel about books with ghosts, but I really liked this group of characters living at the Dellawisp, so I tried to keep an open mind. The ghost stories end up being important and tie the story together. Zoey and the characters she meets all become family and endearing to the reader. At first I was a little annoyed about the birds, but even they become endearing as well. You can’t say too much about this story without giving things away. Around the halfway mark, I was a little bored, but it really picked up for the last 25%. Overall, this was a magical story with some interesting twists and turns along the way.

Very character-driven. Not much plot at all. I really loved the characters and the messages in the book were gorgeous. A fresh take on different types of grief. There was a twist that for once I didn’t see coming. Not for everyone though as it is kind of slow and mostly just character development.

sometimes you pick up a book and end up enjoying it a lot more than you were expecting to, and this was one of those books for me. i absolutely LOVED this book. the magical realism and the found family trope were so well done. i didn’t want this book to end, but i couldn’t put it down either. all the stars.

It was so nice to read this author again. I love the characters and the way they slowly change because of the relationships they develop with each other. The ghosts are unnecessary IMO but I know that Allen loves including them in her stories.

I have loved Sarah Addison Allen's previous books and was looking forward to reading this one, her newest, especially after having found out why it had been delayed. I hope she finds peace and strength in her grief. But I didn't love this book as much as some of her others. It doesn't have the magical realism that most of her other books have. Although, this one has multiple ghost stories that I did enjoy. There are several things that are revealed in this novel - one of which was obvious to me so it was not a surprise. Another one I thought I had figured out, but when it was revealed, I felt a little cheated, like the reveal hadn't been earned or that it hadn't been set up to be the payoff I think the author had hoped it would be. Another reveal felt more justified though I thought the author could have given some additional foreshadowing. I appreciate that this book is ultimately about mothering/fathering and being mothered/fathered (or not) as well as choosing the family you want rather than maybe being bitter about the one you have. There were some dark themes in this book as well as some hopeful ones. A good one but not a favorite.
